Origins of the Domestic Cat...by ***TRIAD

Thousands of years ago in the area of the "fertile crescent" (the middle-east) & in ancient Egypt, human civilization was just getting underway, and villages were springing up. These villages had graineries in which grain was stored. The grain attracted rats which would raid the graineries...and of course this was not considered a good thing by the villagers.

At this same time there was a species of small, wild, desert cats which were in turn attracted to the rats that raided the graineries. The towns people hated the rats, but liked the cats because they killed (and ate the rats). The cats became welcome and valued visitors, and eventually many of the cats began to hang around...sometimes even living with people. The Egyptians even loved cats so much that they worshiped a cat god by the name of Bast. They even mummified cats.

I have seen photos of the close relative of the domestic cat. They still live in desert regions of North Africa...& they look a great deal like their cousins the domestic cat.

So now the next time you look into the eyes of Fluffy you can appreciate the long and mutually beneficial relationship that humans & felinus domesticus has developed.

Meow!

How it changed my life:

Date: 12/28/2003 2:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    I've had cats most of my life, but the last one of mine called "Tiddles" died and I cant bring myself to get another one, I love them...cant stand the heartbreak in losing them though anymore....hugs
Date: 12/29/2003 2:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Yes, it's always too sad when they die. I've seen all too many of them wither away and die from old age (at least they lived out their full nine lives). My previous cat, Duffy, was a mighty hunter, who was the terror of the local field mice. He would often bring one home as an offering for me. Unfortunately, one evening, while he was hunting for field mice, coyotes were also on the hunt, and Duff went to fill the empty stomach of hungry predators.

Date: 1/1/2004 2:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62339    I have two cats right now and have had cats my whole life so I've always wondered how they became domesticated. I knew about Egyptian cats but I always wondered how cats lived before then. It's hard to picture a domestic cat living on its own in the wild like a dog could.
Date: 1/2/2004 8:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    There are some domestic cats who do become wild: feral cats. They live on the edges of modern society hunting & foraging to make a living.
