Stealing, as it were

OK I was just thinking of something. Stealing. Now, when we think of stealing you think of someone robbing a bank right? But the RIAA has changed our perception of it. I mean, really think about it. Is it 'stealing' just because something was free? I don't think so. If you find a pack of gum sittin on the ground, and you decide to pick it up and chew it, is that stealing? No. If you find someone's wallet sitting on the ground, and you pick it up, is it stealing? Not stealing, per say, however we know its morally wrong. Now, on the other hand, if you walk up to someone and just take their wallet out of their hands, well than thats stealing. I'm not sayin either one is right, and if you find something that belongs to someone else you should delfy try to return it. Most of the time. Some thigns are just not worth returning, but some things are morally wrong However, think about it. Music.... Gum. Ok say the CEO of Trident sees you picking up a pack of gum off the ground and eating it, would he sue you thousands of dollars per stick of gum you eat? No. And it's sad, because all anyone thinks about anymore is money.

Im not saying stealing is right, becasue it's not. It's wrong. All Im saying is to take into consideration what stealing really is and think about. Think about the difference between 'stealing' and 'sharing'. Are they one in the same? Well, even before the online piracy issues, you would have had this problem. I mean, come on, even at buffets! They wont let u take food off someone's plate whos sitting right next to you without giving you a hard time. Is that stealing? Or is it sharing? Another example from a restaraunt... if you take a sweet n low from the container, is that stealing, or sharing They are provided for you for free. So wouldnt that consider the restaraunt sharing it with you? I could go on and on. Just think about it.

Date: 12/25/2003 7:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 57579    Well I could debate this on both sides. 1st side it's free. Yes it's free it's there and it's just a song put out on the air. 2nd side. There are things called copyright laws and these songs have them. Also when downloading the songs you're not paying anyone so soon the record companies will go bankrupt. Then soon we'll have no music to download. Just think of it from both sides
Date: 12/25/2003 7:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    lol, glad to say I inspired this post :-P Some things I wouldn't consider stealing. Such as the whole free sheet music thing and the music files. That I call sharing because when you download music they want you to "share" other files. but if you were to go into a store and take something, that would be stealing. Also if you find a wallet. If there was money in it and you took the money but returned the wallet, I would call that stealing too.
Date: 12/25/2003 7:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    I see what you're saying, but if the ARTISTS don't consent to having their music 'shared' then in a way it IS stealing.
Date: 12/25/2003 8:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 62478    Well at some point its both....but the RIAA is saying that you have no right to "share" what is not techincaly yours. on the other hand if you are not selling the product you should be able to destribite it if you own a copy of the cd. And I think that is all they can get you for is if you have the mp3 but do not own the cd. Good post ....deathletgo
Date: 12/26/2003 7:06:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62249    Exactly... laws, lol. It was very difficult to write this because I just took some NyQuil beforehand... I knew There was something I should have mentioned.
Date: 12/26/2003 2:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    The RIAA has always had the wrong idea of people "stealing songs". Ever since people started sharing songs in the old days with FTP servers it should have always been reffered to as copyright infringment. Misty Spirit is also wrong, the companies will not go bankrupt, as long as capitalism stays intact they will find some way or another of ripping you off. Just about anyone with the internet can download all the songs they want right now and people still buy cd's. And there also would probably never be a day that there would be no music to download. Independent artists would arise, which is what happened with mp3.com when it was still under a different owner.
Date: 12/26/2003 3:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62249    Yea... mp3.com was great. Didnt it shut down though? Er sumthin like that?
Date: 12/26/2003 3:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    Mp3.com was sued by the RIAA and then the owner had to sell it to another guy because he couldn't afford the lawsuit. The new owner deleted every single file and artist page and plans to bring none of it back. The only thing he plans to do is to try and make a site where you have to pay to download. Luckily I had downloaded a good portion of songs from it, if anyone wants files they can no longer get I have over 50 files from the horror punk rock section.
Date: 12/26/2003 4:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62249    Wait why did the RIAA sue them... i thought he only cataloged independants.... lol do they have power over them to?
Date: 12/27/2003 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 24732    No, for some reason they started letting any band put their music on there. Some of the RIAA owned bands uploaded their music to the site. The RIAA should have gone after the bands that they owned for doing that, but instead they sued the owner of mp3.com, mp3.com didn't have enough money to afford the lawsuit so the owner sold the company and settled the lawsuit with $. There are more details to the story, but that's all I have heard about it.
