One thing I always wonder around the holidays >VG<

Why is it that we North Americans say "Merry Christmas" as apposed to the traditional UK's (and other places'> "Happy Christmas"? I mean, we NEVER use the word 'Merry' at any other point in our lives EVER; with maybe the exception of "Robin Hood and his band of merry men" or whatever. So, who started the "Merry Christmas" thing way back when? And why have we adopted it into North American culture?

Date: 12/24/2003 5:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    i wonder just the opposite. "Why do they say happy??" I guess it's just the same way we have different words for different things. You say mate, we say friend.
Date: 12/24/2003 5:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    Me too tired to think.
Date: 12/24/2003 5:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 62222    That is interesting. However the words, essentially mean the same thing so it's probably just an affinity for one word over the other. Just because we don't say Merry now alot, doesn't mean it wasn't all the rage back in the day. Well, it would have to be Waaayyyyy back in the day..but still...a plausible theroy I feel. And the only reason we think it sounds weird is because we have been saying it the other way for a long time.<RegretfulHalo>
