Can a virus be given through a link to your computer?

Today, I was reading an away message from a guy friend. Well at least I thought he was a friend but I do not think so anymore. Well, Okay, I think, he is upset. It is not the first time he has played these games with me. Like, not talking to me for a month or so. Well anyways, today, the first time he has been on-line in a few days he leaves an away message on his IM and it says I cant beleive I found (my screen name)'s picture, HAHAHA. So, of course I opened the link. the link was to a site, I think it gives you a virus. So when I get there it says by entering this site you agree to the terms and whatever, and then up above it says, if you have adware on your computer and you want to remove click here. But I saw no picture of me so I think maybe it is just a faulty link so I copy the link in my web address box, instead of just clicking on it, and the same thing comes up, but now I got a box saying something about a virus has been detected on your computer. Like trojan dropper, from my norton antivirus software but I ran a scan for viruses but nothing was found. I think my software blocked the viruses. I dont know why he is doing that, if he did that is immature and crosses the line with me. See another thing is, he knew I would check it because I always check his hyperlinks, just to see what he has up, and I guess he must of had a counter on it, and knew I checked it. He could of told everyone else not to click the link and that it was meant for me only. I also think he may of been putting like a spyware on my computer, and FYI, he is a computer science major and I dont doubt that he knows a lot of this stuff. Can someone put spyware on your computer? What info. could they get about you? What do yall think, any explanations, is it possible, do you think he meant to do this to be mean? Can you even do that? Wouldnt he have to make the web-site or something, I am confused.

Date: 12/21/2003 9:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 17081    It's possible you have a virus. But it could have been one of those pop up ads trying to make you think you have a virus so that you buy their software. I've used Spybot, Adaware an, Norton McAfee, and PRCVIEW, to look for dangerous things. PRCVIEW will kill thos undeletable things.
Date: 12/21/2003 11:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 46530    A few comments. It is possible to transmit viruses via IM programs, and also to place both trojans and spyware in websites (sometimes only 1kb in size so you wouldnt notice a file of that size being downloaded). Having an up to date AntiVirus program is essential, and I would recomend Spybot to both get rid of spyware and adware, and it also has a neat feature to immunize you from getting them in future (similar to your AV stopping viruses getting on your machine in the first place). Find Spybot through google and get it, if you haven't already
Date: 12/21/2003 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 52746    Oh, I don't know. I've never heard of it but anything is possible with technology.
Date: 12/21/2003 3:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 58427    Yup its pretty much a virus. I have it and have tried lots of uninstall instructions but none of them worked so...I dunno
Date: 12/21/2003 3:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 51827    I installed a spybloc or something like that, and it detected some spyware and adware files. I cleaned them up and think I have got rid of everything. But my question is, has anyone heard of the buddypicute.net web-site????
Date: 12/21/2003 4:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 62249    Oo thats real problem! I had this and it made me soo mad. To remove it go to imchaos.com.. they have a patch for it's removal - MC Bacon
Date: 12/22/2003 9:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    haha yea NEVER click on the ones where it says haha i found so and so's pic here... thats one of the aim profile viruses... theres ways to get rid of it tho
Date: 12/22/2003 9:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    oh yea, and he had no choice to put it on there or not!! it does it automatically.. so dont be mad at him!
Date: 12/30/2003 4:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 59266    it was probably just and advertisement. download either Ad-Aware or Spybot: Search & Destroy to scan for spyware, if nothing is found it was just a stupid hoax.
