I have often talked about my grandfater and things he has told me. This is a story he told me that happend to him when he was a missionary on a small Island off of Australia.

gf = grandfather

PR = the local "priest" of the "tribe" of locals.

It was a nice afteroon not to warm as it often was during this the time of the year. A nice day for hunting. My gf and the PR decided to go hunting for a pig for a ceramoiny later that night (not sure what the cer. was for). My grandfather growing up on a farm knew hunting and killing animals and had done so many times in the past for survival.

So off into the woods they go, following a well known hunting trail. Along the way the trail forked into two paths. The PR started walking over to the left trial and my gf started to follow. The PR held out his and and said "No Buddy, you stay there, I will be right back." The PR walked a little more further to a place on the side of the road where a group of rocks were laying on the ground.

The PR bent down and picked up a stick, and tossed it down into the middle of the rocks and started talking in his native tounge. My gf did not know much and couldn't really tell what he was saying. After the PR was done he walked over to my gf and said "Ok we can go now." and without explanation started to take the right path. Well being the cerious person my gf is, he asked him what he did. The PR said "I was asking"(I dont remeber the name of the spirit but I can find out if anyone is interested, I had never heard the name before)" to come along with us and bring us good luck." My gf asked "We will get a pig?" the answere was yes, without a dought.

A little bit later down the road they came across two pigs. They stoped and hid before the pigs saw. My gf had a small .22 rifle (the biggest gun they would allow him to have). My gf told the PR to circle around and if they tried to run to pop out and yell scearing them back towards my gf. So the PR did as was told. When in place my gf shot the first pig and he said the pig fell dead. (Here I have to interviene. As my gf told me and I as well understand haveing done so, when you kill an animal you can "see" the life go from them, in other words you know when they are dead, and this pig died...did not move....no longer was.) Then my gf poped off another shot at the second pig. Only wonding the second one (I assume he was running the other way afther the first shot). The PR jumped out and the pig started running the other way. My grandfather shot the second pig and down he went dead. After they walked over to each other the PR said to my gf, "Why did you kill the second pig we could have saved him for the next holiday that is coming up." My gf said "Well I had already shot him, so I thought it was the only decient thing to do."

Well they picked up the second pig and started towards the first pig (only a couple of yards away). When they got there, there was no pig, there was no blood, but there were tracks from two pigs leading up to where the first one should have been. All that was left was a pile of rocks with a large one in the middle with a bullet mark on it. My gf was as you can very well imagion perplexed. "Where did the pig go?" The PR smiled at my gf and said "Buddy, I can not expect you to belive what I'm about to tell you, but we islanders belive that if you ask (the spirts name) for help and you kill two pigs he gets the first one." My gf looked at the PR for a moment, then grabed the legs of the second pig and they both started back toward the village.

My gf told me that this is exactly how it happend, and no matter what you belive that is exactly what he saw. In fact he belive so strongly in it that he told me that if when he dies he gets to heave and God himself says it happend otherwise my gf would call him a lier. (Thats my gf for you :>.

Deathletgo

How it changed my life:

Well it deffently makes me think about all the things that we don't ever know exist :)

Date: 12/13/2003 4:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    Whoa...interesting story. We Maori from New Zealand have similar sorts of beleifs and customs around hunting...paying homage to Tane Mahuta (God of the Forest) through various rituals/offerings before taking one of his children. I've seen much in the bush over the decades I've been tramping/hunting...many things that defy logical explanation...so I don't doubt this story for a moment. Peace,
