eating too much is an eating disorder. Anyhow, I don't think the media is promoting the unhealthy body image that contributes to anorexia and bulimia by reporting on things like this. Quite the opposite. |

I would have to agree with you to an extent. I live in the states, and I get sick and tired of watching the news and hearing one day how such-and-such food is bad for you, then three days later, it isn't anymore. (I weigh 246 pounds, within the last 6 months, I've lost 40 pounds, and I'm still dropping. My goal is to reach somewhere between 140-160 pounds.) I get angry with the media too. The news shows will show a big piece on obesity, then commercials will run a whole series of ads on skinny people going to McDonalds, and all sorts of other places for dinner. But also here in America, I learned as I read in a magazine article, portion sizes are different. I believe reading once that the size of the large fries in Europe or Austraila is the equivalant to the Medium in the USA. Here in the US, the notion that 'bigger is better' is a great concept for everything except figure size. This is the same media that projects a 'thin is in' image, yet will endorse commercials to be played on their station that go against everything they just said was bad for us to eat. As for me... I follow this diet: I eat what I want, when I want, just in moderation. It's been working well. Sure, I goof up every now and then, but who doesn't? We're all human. Now if only the media would stop trying to point out all the folks who are obese and started trying to do something about, something less invasive and dangerous than stomach stapling and other surgeries and dangerous diet pills, we could get something done about it. --Christine |
