*nod* that freaked me out when i found out you were on paxil.. i mean, god my heart almost stopped.. i remember how bad that was for me.. i was on such a high dosage too.. i was completely drugged, falling asleep at school, getting worse.. i didn't want to see that happen again... so for anyone else who takes it, PLEASE RECONSIDER or talk to the doctor about this prescription.. its one of the worst antidepressants they have that teens can go on. |

I've never been on any meds like this. I worked with a lady who took prozac and another antidepressant plus several other drugs for her multitude of medical problems. It bothers me that some doctors just throw a drug at something without trying other things or even thinking about the best approach to the patients problem. All the drug advertising on TV makes the situation worse. Good luck. |

I agree that drugs should be monitored to see individual effects. I know someone on Paxil and it helps so much for her to have a normal life. CC28, depression is an imbalance in the brain's chemicals. Medication helps for those who experience it, it's not the same thing as being sad and not happy. I won't go on a soapbox, but it is a chemical imbalance, not a feeling that you can dismiss and 'get happy'. I am sorry Paxil did not work for you, Roxie, and I am glad you are off of it, seeing that you did not react well to it. |

my sister first started taking Paxel in 1996, for OCD. At that time, her doctor assured her that it was "non-addictive". My sister took Paxil for 3 years, before the doctors admitted it "might" be addictive, and I was mortified to find out she had never had labs to check her blood work!!!!(Paxil can cause Liver damage & needs to be monitored within the blood stream). Now she is on Zoloft. *sigh* I am very, very sorry to hear about this. I am glad you have had a "wash-out", and you seem to be recovering. Peace & Light & Love be with you!!!!! |

I was on Paxil. You cannot just stop taking it, you have to decrease the dosage and ween yourself. It helped me deal with the reason why I was taking it, panic attacks. All together it made me feel better from my moods to panic attacks. I have been off it or at least 6 months and havent had a panic attack since I started it or stopped it. I had no bad side effects what so ever. Everyone has a different reaction to drugs than others and I am sorry you had a bad one. Paxil isnt the type of drug you can just quit and walk away. Everyone needs to research any drug a doctor subscribes! |

some people having a reaction to a drug doesn't make it a bad drug people. my mom is allergic to penicillin and i am allergic to coedine. neither is a bad drug, it just isn't right for us. my mom has been on paxil for over 7 years with no serious side effects, just fyi. by all means, research away before making your choices, but don't freak people on something they know nothing about. i take wellbutrin for smoking, and seizures are a serious and common enough side effect that i get warned every time i fill the bottle. no seizures here. |

You are a very strong girl, Roxie! Not many people can admit they have or had an addiction to ANYTHING. Wether it's drugs or cats, I mean, It take s a STRONG person to admit they have a problem. This sounds like both physical dependence (the need to continue taking drugs to avoid withdrawls or in your case depression) and Psychological dependence(addiction, craving etc. It can persist even after withdrawls, from physical dependence, frequently leading to renewed drug-seeking behavior) But with Psychological dependence, you have to be strong and say no, I am not going to start taking that drug again. And that's wat you did. You are a very strong girl. You didn't let this drug take over your life ior ruin it. You stod up and knocked it off it's feet before it knocked you off yours. I'm proud of you Roxie!! *huggs* Srry you were so depressed n angry cause of this medication/drug. *big huggs* *+*Sarah*+* |

I suffer from depression, and they briefly prescribed Paxil to me once, during a trial when the current anti-depressant I was on was no longer working efficiently. I suffered from heart palpatations. Needless to say, I didn't take it anymore. But it's odd that the symptoms you mention of the violent mood swings. I had similiar reaction when taking Synthroid, a medication for hypothyroidism. It took awhile before finding a doctor who would believe me, because they all said it was impossible to have an 'allergic' reaction to that drug. But a few hours after taking Synthroid, I would become moody, very combative, want to throw things, etc. Finally, to appease me, they switched me to Levoxyl, and no more side effects. Apparantly I was having a reaction to one of the inactive ingredients of the drug. As for my depression, I now take Lexapro as my anti-depressant, and it works wonderfully. I know Paxil is widely known for its side effects... but so is Effexor, if you've ever heard it by its other name (as its called by many patients who take it)>>>>SIDEeffexor. I may just check that site out. Thanks for the info. --Christine |

Roxie, I have been on up to 50 Mgs of Paxil for five years now. I give Paxil good marks in lifting me out of a seven year long depression. But now I've been on the stuff for five years. I think that I can cope with out it now. At least I want to try. My psychiatriast is going to help me to wean myself off of it...at the rate of ten mgs a week. At that rate it shoud take around a month. I made the mistake once of going cold turky from Paxil for two weeks. It was a nightmare. I had "headrushes" and unsteadyness, and my emotions ran a real roller coaster ride. So this time I'm going to do it under the supervistion of my Dr. I wish both of us the best of luck. Let's keep in touch. |

I don't think that I have met a single person that has taken an anti-depressant for a period of time and came down off it without any side effects. Most of them have the common effects of buzzing in the ears, the way that a neon sign does and what one would call tracers. It's almost like you take two steps, stop and your whole body feels like you took one more step anyway, or you turn your head, stop it and it's like a delayed reaction that you see everything your eyes passed after your head stops moving. Very wierd feeling in deed. I'm sorry that Paxil wasn't beneficial to you, but that doesn't mean that it won't be for someone else. Most people that suffer from depression end up yo-yo bouncing from all different kinds before finding the right one. |

I have to agree with a lot that has been said here, St. John's Wart.. well that stuff works for a little bit then it won't work anymore, also I was informed by 2 doctors as well as a report I had read that when taken St.John's wart for longer than 6 months, it can cause problems within the body. It was a while back when I heard about this, so I can't rememeber exactly what the effects were. Medication works differently for everyone. My Dr. had put me on prozac. It didn't work. I also had severe panic attacks which had eventually left me scared to leave my own home. Everything works differently for everyone of course. However, for me.. it was a change of my thought process and how I viewed things and it didn't involve medication to do that. I am a much happier person, I don't suffer from depression or anything and I have my life back. It took a lot of work.. but it was better than dealing with all the medication that I could have been on. I'm sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience with the medication you were put on and I am glad you got off of it. :-) God Bless |

hi PrincessRoxieRage , i just wanted to say that the messege in this post will surly help some of the many out there in there battles with these feelings that feal like there only happening to them. it took alot of nerve to put yourself out here for all your friends to see. the first step to becoming cured is admitting that the problem exists. and the doctors out there are to quick to write prescriptions for people and just group them together. Paxil is not addictive as we think of most narcotics as addictive. However, if you take it you must take it REGULARLY and exactly as prescribed. You can't take it one day and then miss a day. It's a reuptake inhibitor which means it causes seratonin to build up in your system over time which leads to a calming effect. If you don't take it regularly you don't get the desired effect, but instead you end up with a worse chemical imbalance. Also, if you quit it suddenly you will get an even worse effect...a crash effect where your chemical balance goes haywire. If you quit using it you MUST be weaned off of it. |
