Chapter 14 : Axed
NOTE : You should be able to piece together what happened to Chris... no pun intended...
Her hand was still on the handle as she saw the hulking figure running up the stairs. She pulled the door shut, but his body hit it hard sending Madison to the floor. Madison got to her feet and saw the door swing open again and he walked in. His shoulders filled the door frame, his chest heaved, his eyes glared at her. She couldn't stare at him.
She ran, back down the hallway. His footsteps followed her. She ran to the last doors on the hallway, past the basement, past the living room, to the last set of doors. She flung it open and shut it behind her looking around for something to block entry with. She saw the nearby dresser and ran to the other side pushing it. It slid hard against the floor. The ground shook as he neared, she shoved harder.
The ground shook again as something pounded against the door. She ran against it with all her might as the doorknob began to turn...
*****
Jade ran to the back of the house sobbing. She was the weak one, she had done just what he wanted, she had let Madison open the door and now he had her too. She stopped crying and looked around the backyard. In the darkness she saw a light, not far from the edge of the house. A lone window and a swinging lantern. A shed.
She moved towards it looking around, making sure nothing could be seen of her. The yard was damp as she moved towards it. She didn't see anybody inside as she made her way towards the door. The rusty handle and the swaying wooden door didn't comfort her much.
She reached for the handle and pulled it open.
And screamed.
*****
Madison fell hard as the dresser topped over. It ripped the brass handle off the door and flattened it below the weight of the dresser. A loud grunt was heard from outside the door, and a scream from somewhere around her.
The door couldn't be open now, Madison thought.
She rolled off the dresser and looked around the room for a means of escape. Another scream came, she saw the window with the shutters drawn. She ran towards it pushing with all her might as it slid up. She reached for the shutteres and shoved them open.
"No! No please no," Jade screamed.
Jade's figure was evident in the doorway of the shed, outlined by the swaying lantern.
"Jade," Madison yelled.
Something crashed at the door. Jade turned around.
Madison took the chance and crawled out the window landing on the grass. The door shook again, she looked behind her as she ran towards the shed. Nothing could prepare her for what she saw.
*****
His fist plunged through the door. He pulled his arm out and stuck his face in, sniffing wildly. His eyes look around his bedroom. They are not there, but he hears her scream. He sees the window open, and he knows.
*****
Chris' hat laid on the floor. The sleeve of his shirt hung off the table and on the table was his body or what was left of it.
"Chris! Chris! No! Chris," Jade cried.
"Jade, please we have to get out of here," Madison yelled.
Jade ran to the table but Madison grabbed her and threw her into the corner. She slammed the door behind her and out from behind the door fell a yellow chainsaw. The tools on the wall shook with the force of the door slamming. Madison walked over to Jade and got on her knees nex to her.
"Jade, we have to get out of here. We can't just sit around and mourn," Madison yelled.
"Chris... Chris... he... why? Why did they do this," Jade cried.
"Jade we have to stick together. We have to find-," Madison started.
Breathing.
Jade silenced, Madison looked out the window and saw the shadow standing in the corner of the yard looking for them. She got on her knees and looked around.
"What are we gonna do," Jade whispered.
"Anything," Madison said.
She looked at the chainsaw, would it work? It would be too noisy. He would come and if it didn't start- she didnt' want to think about that. She looked at the tools above the table that held Chris' body parts. A hammer, a screwdriver, crowbar, and a hatchet.
Could she reach it in time?
The breathing was louder. She had no choice. She reached for it and took it in her hand. The screwdriver clattered to the table. She dove back into the corner standing just out of sight of the window. Jade sobbed silently.
The footsteps came towards the door. It burst open and Jade lunged at the beast slamming the axe deep into it's stomach. He fell onto his back crying out in a fury that frightened Madison. Jade got to her feet and the two ran past him and around the house and to the driveway. Madison started back down it but Jade stopped her.
"He's in there," Jade said.
Madison looked back at her.
"We have to go," Madison yelled.
"Derek is in there Madison! He took him," Jade yelled.
Madison looked at her.
"He's dead Madison. He's dead! No one else is going to get us now! You know that! We have to see if Derek's okay," Jade yelled.
Madison knew Jade was right and she approached the house, climbing the stairs and reentering the all to familiar hallway.
