Get your legal mp3's while you still can :( mp3.com will be no longer (<>..<>)

Mp3.com, one of the largest websites to offer legal mp3's was just recently sold to Cnet. Most recently they had been putting about 200 new bands on the site a day. Cnet, the new owner, has said it was going to get rid of all of the mp3's on the entire site. As well as each artist page which had lyrics, links to their websites, and pictures.

This may not sound like a big deal to most people who never found anything at mp3.com, but it's a major tragedy for people who listen to independent recording companies, local bands, as well as starting musicians trying to get their work out. I personally have a folder with nearly 50 mp3 files I've gotten off of there. Usually when websites end they are put in archives, but in this case all of the artist pages on mp3.com will not be going into archives. All of the music and pages, as well as small time radio stations will disappear within 2 weeks (as of the 19th, time is already running out). The only records of the original site will be the mp3's on people's computers. So if you don't get any files you wanted within that time, chances are you won't have a good chance at legally getting them again. A few of the artists have enough web space to put their mp3's on, but a lot of their sites are only cheap Geocities pages.

The reason all of this is happening is because the owner of mp3.com got sued by you guessed it... the evil RIAA, along with some other companies. It is unlikely anyone else will be able to run a site like the original mp3.com, because of the large amount of money it takes and also the chances of getting sued. I'm not sure on the technicalities of the lawsuit, but it had something to do with people uploading copyrighted material to the site. I'm guessing some of the artists were uploading their copyrighted songs onto the pages, ticking off the record companies. That would be the fault of the artists themselves, but the details of the lawsuits are unknown. Anyways the original website will never be as it once was, and the new owners are not going to improve it (in terms of people getting free legal music).

Info from- http://www.boycott-riaa.com/article/9078

If you don't already download files from there and want files before they are gone I suggest these bands:

Blitzkid, Cancerslug, Mister Monster, the Everdead, The Cryptkeeper Five, The Brain Invaders, The Jackalopes, the Frank-N-Steins, Shadow Reichenstein, Memphis Murder Men, Aluesha, The Serpenteens, The Casket Bangers (whom are no longer around), I Voted for Kodos, The Last Gunslinger, Michael Graves, the Dickies...if you don't get a chance and want to hear some of these songs I can mail them to you when ever I have time.

And even though I don't like them, AFI has a few songs on there too. This site is also a source for a lot of ska music, if you like that kind of music. And now to end this post, it's too bad mp3.com had to sell out and I hate the RIAA!

Date: 11/22/2003 12:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    Yeah, it's not good news at all. Mp3.com will stil be around, but it will be nothing like it's former self under the old owner. This will basically wipe legal mp3's off of the internet, there are a few other sites that have them. But none were ever as big as mp3.com

Date: 11/22/2003 6:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    I am never... EVER buying music again, I will tape it off of the radio and then make my OWN cd... then delete any evidence of it... screw you RIAA
Date: 11/22/2003 8:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 60052    RIAA has now messed up the internet's only attempt to trade legal mp3's. People are going to be downloading illegally more than ever now...it's their own fault.
Date: 11/22/2003 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    If the mp3s are legal, I don't understand how they could be sued. It isn't fair. It's going to get to the point where no one is ever going to pay for music again. I still don't see what the big deal is as long as you aren't selling the music you download.
Date: 11/22/2003 10:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    Yeah Kethria, I don't buy any music any more either. The only kind of music I would consider buying is from independent recording companies, like Caroline, Antidote, and HellCat records which are not associated with the RIAA.
Date: 11/22/2003 10:11:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    From what I understand the lawsuits were because mp3.com was allowing people to put copy righted material on their page. Why they couldn't just take it down, I don't know. About 80% of the files were legal and with independent companies, but for some reason or another they had some copy righted material up there. And so much had been downloaded that they owed the RIAA some money. Just in the fines alone it was up in the millions. If the RIAA had been reasonable they would have just allowed mp3.com to take down the ilegal files and get on with life. But that's not how the RIAA is.
