The thoughts of Nick screaming at the unknown creature on his front porch was enough to keep me awake most of the night. Finally, I couldn't help myself. I dressed and sneaked out of the house during the 'witching hour', curious as to what Nick could be hiding from everyone. I trudged to his house in the dark, carrying with me an old flashlight. I'd pulled on my father's old army coat shortly before leaving the house.
There was one light on in Nick's house on the second floor. It looked to me to be candlelight, as it was a somber flickering instead of the piercing beams that normally came from electric lights. I wondered if he was still awake. Being the person he was, he probably stayed up until dawn. He always had bags under his large eyes during school.
I rapped on the door with my heart thudding and worrying about what Nick might do when he saw me. I'd always been nice to him in school, so it wasn't like he'd consider me an enemy and send me away. We've been acquaintances, for the most part. What did I have to worry?
Nearly a minute later, I heard the sound of someone unlocking the door. It edged open slowly, letting out a loud creak that surely could have woken all the house residents, including his bedridden fat mother. Eyes peered out at me in the darkness. A candle was thrust forward, casting haunting shadows over Nick's face.
"What do you want this time of night, Caitlin?" he demanded.
"I saw you earlier, Nick, when you were on your porch. Is everything okay?"
He said tightly, "Everything's fine."
I didn't believe that. "Who the hell is Ahern?" I stammered, remembering how he yelled at a shadow who held that very name.
Nick shoved the door open wider and stepped aside, as if he wanted me to go inside with him. "I'll show you who Ahern is and then maybe you'll understand me."
I nodded slowly and prepared myself for what very well might be a horrible revelation...
