Internet addiction..a real disease?---r1

Is internet addiction a real disorder or is it just like anything else humans get consumed with?

If someone spends six hours a day on the net surfing, posting or whatever some are now calling it an addiction. Yet if some people spend their time consumed with any other activity it's not an addiction. Is the Internet being unneccsarily stigmatized? Or is it a real problem that needs to be addressed?

Date: 10/21/2003 9:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    I knew someone that was addicted to the internet...an old roommate. Yes, it's a very real psychological addiction. She was on the web all day and all night sometimes.
Date: 10/21/2003 12:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 55386    I think it can be an addiction. To most people it's just some place to have fun, to others that feel meaningless, it's their life. It's their reality. When I was 11 and going through my parents divorce and everything, I would spend up to 8 hours a day on. I have stopped doing that but I do still go on at least 2 hours a day. My friend Garcia goes on for the rest of the day after school until she is told to get off or go to bed. Just like alcohal....People can have small amounts once and a while for some fun. Others do it because to them, it's their life. So in my opinion, I think it is.
Date: 10/21/2003 12:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 27558    I look at it this way, yea I'll admit I'm addicted to the internet but its A LOT better then some things you can be addicted to, so I don't think there is any need to address this kind of problem, save the addressing to drug addicts and stuff like that.
Date: 10/21/2003 2:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 46486    It is a real disease.. I did an entire report on it for my computer class two years ago. IAD was classified how people can't leave the computer and stop having communication with family and friends and just live online really. People say that they are addicted to the internet, they are wrong.. Spending a few hours per day is not addiction.. This addicition is you always being online, never wanting to let anyone go online. What's funy is that there are websites online to help you with IAD, LOL..

Date: 10/22/2003 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    "hi im justin, screenname is jestr and im a netaholic" lol thats pathetic, im going now......ok i lied.....ok im going.....i cant the world will crash, the net world that is.....ha i crack myself up
Date: 10/23/2003 9:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 57653    I believe it's a real addiction. It also has it's own extrememes...it CAN be unhealthy. If it results in a person cutting themselves off from reality, spending too much time being inactive can lead to weight problems (sometimes extreme) and ruin "real life" relationships. But I don't think it's different from other things. I read ALL THE TIME and yes it's an addiction and it wasn't always a healthy one. Any addiction can be bad....alcohol, drugs, internet, and yes reading. Moderation is the key to everything........
Date: 11/1/2003 1:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    IT'S A REAL PROBLEM!! i don't have it but my mom was a junkie for a couple of years. she would flip out when somebody wanted to use her computer for more than five minutes! she would freak and call me crazy when i would tell her that i hadn't yet read the e-mail she had sent me a week before! she couldn't believe i could go a day without turning my computer on. when i was moving and didn't even hook up my computer for two weeks, she thought i had mental problemns! i'm serious. she had it bad. she finally saw it herself and had us take her computer out of the house and hide it. withdrawl lasts a few weeks and people can get a little cranky!!
