man I hope you've been making these debates for the sake of debating and not being a cold hearted person in real life...so I'll have faith. I seen that movie too and she wasn't morbidly obese, and also it was JUST ONE MOVIE. Did you notice in the movie how she only would eat 1 matza ball while everyone else had 3? And how she ate salads while her friends ate pizza? We DO need more slightly overwight (20lbs or under)/normal weight people on TV. 1 movie aint a trend specially being on ABCfamily LOL! I would say that girl was average bodied but whateva. You know just because people are overweight doesn't mean they DESERVE TO (i.e. sit on their butt and eat all day.) Thats like saying all skinny people have eating disorders (which aint true.) I'm 180lbs, 5'4, vegetarian, and exercise more in a day then your average person. I don't deserve to be this fat but I am! We need more fat role models, otherwise we end up with all those eating disorders, I can personally say Im an emotional eater and seeing Britney Spears and Beyonce` in magazines makes me so upset! So yeah I totally disagree with you...outta question what is a 'average person' to u? |

I just think we need some moderation. We have one side promoting the waify models. The others are trying to not hurt any feelings and are saying being overweignt is ok! How bout a happy medium? A lil conviction to get people to be healthy and a lil comfort to make em realize they don't need to be perfect. |

but as in your example you make it out like this girl was super overweight, when in reality she wasnt. Id say she is moderation. |

I think the extreme view has always been to criticize and make fun of fat people and they are trying to FINALLY portray them in a different light. I think this movie is a great idea and I think you are taking it's message and intent incorrectly. They are trying to promote ACCEPTANCE of overweight people. I don't think they're trying to promote acceptance of being lazy or unhealthy. This movie is a good thing, not a bad thing. One other thing you need to realize is that when a person is being ridiculed for being "fat," the person doing the ridiculing isn't bothering to ask them if they're fat due to genetics or for medical reasons. It's purely a prejudice that needs to be eliminated. |

I honestly think that we need more stereotypical size 12 women in movies. My fiancee is a size 10 now but she was around size 22. I think that size 12 is a nice size to aspire to. Not everyone can be a size 10. |

Kaja said what I was going to say.. lol... and Kurt reiterated what I was going to add.. I am about 160 or so lbs (not sure exactly) but being only 5'0" tall does make it seem like I weigh more than I do, and I get the what I call "fat person identification look" all the time.. I say, that people all the way around need to mind their own business and if they dont like the way I look they can turn their heads.. Same with this movie, if you dont like it, dont watch it.. Simple *hugs* |

Personally I think we need more movie about accepting overweight people. All overweight people are not lazy or any of the other usual sterotypes. Some people are just born that way. Will you ridicule someone for being overweight when they can be no other way? Im overweight, and I am scared to walk out of my house in anything other that a baggy t-shirt and jeans because I am always ofraid people will think I'm fat. So I like this acceptance thing that TV and movies are doing lately. And on a better note, look at Queen Latifa. That woman may not be a size 12, but shes still graceful, elegant, and absolutly gorgoues. |

I realize there are those who really can't control their weight. And I made a qualificatioin in this post regarding thsoe. But you have to admit, many are overweight simply because they are lazy. It's within their control, but they do nothing about it. And if things are watched out for, we're going to make these people feel as if it's ok! Again those who can't control their weight because of health reasons or other reasons beyond their control, I'm not talking about them. |

so we should stigmatize everyone because 'some' are a certain way? I guess we should stimatize skinny people because 'some' have eating disorders...*Slightly* overweight girls and boys (and many of them arent that way JUST cuz of laziness) need to know its okay to not be a size 5...I dont think having a heavier person on TV encourages laziness at all, it IS OKAY for them to show you CAN BE A PERSON AND BE OVERWEIGHT because why should people (overweight for whatever reason) be stigmatized and guilited into hating themselves? Even if they are that way because of laziness skinny people wont make it easier, it just makes them feel worse about themselves and crash diet and binge eat, no help WHAT SO EVER! This movie (and any show with an overweight girl or guy in it) is a BRILLANT example that overweight people are just that: PEOPLE. You cant possibly tell me seeing average or skinny people makes people wanna be healthy, it just makes them wanna live up to standards they cant always reach. Everyone is different in what weight is good and bad for them...sorry still cant agree with a word said here (other then people who agree with me LOL!) |

Like I said above....people who criticize, tease or hurt overweight people, don't generally stop to ask why they're overweight. You're giving them to much credit...that's why acceptance of all overweight people needs to be established. These totally delusional ideas of what the perfect body looks like need to be diminished but never will be completely. That's why larger people need to be placed into the forefront of society and shown in a different light. |

whats funny is that you missed the entire point of the movie... it was not to accept overweight people.. it had nothing to do with being overweight.. yes.. they did bring it up because generally, modelling and such does have this big thing with weight.. BUT.. the movie's main point was to BE YOURSELF. they say it in the beginning of the movie to the little girl, and then the little girl says it to her. Becca changes her look and style because of this, and people get upset because it's not her. i'm surprised even this movie was so misunderstood... |

since when does being a size 13 or even 15 classify you as a horrible role model to young people?? i think there is wayy too much stigma telling girls they need to be under a 10... and because of such people like that is why girls are leaning over a toilet hurling thier guts out... and why the age of the average girl who does such is getting younger and YOUNGER |

I think either way we can't stop what some people do....I think they should start showing more curvy people though. I myself am curvy from genetics, and maybe so because I might be a bit lazy, but I do get around a lot. I'm ridiculed at school for it....I think if the media started to show that it's okay to be curvy, and be the way you are, then I would love it!Like, look at all those music videos with the rap stars, and take good looks at movie....You rarely ever seen someone that is curvy. Queen Latifa is one of my heros for it....She's doing what she wants and she ain't a stick. But you know...only my opinion |

I think I could qualify my post with, "this excludes those who are overweight because they can't help it." a million times and it still be interpreted as if I'm applying to all over weight people. Anyway, I'm just saying lets be careful or else we're going to be make being unhealthy a vogue thing! It will be just as vogue as being skinny and having an eating disorder...That's all this post is about. Maybe I should have put my "qualification" in there a hundred times? *shrug* |

I saw a movie called "Real Women Have Curves" and I think you all should check it out, ANYWAY though. I don't know where you get being a bit overweight is unhealthy. There is NO perfect weight. Yes, some people are lazy and don't do anything, and yes, some skinny people have eating disorders, because they choose that, but that doesn't mean everyone in the world is that stupid. I mean, I am a bit overweight, and because of the media and cruel people I am ridiculed about it everyday. Looks shouldn't matter AT ALL! So what if someone is unhealthy in weight? Does it mean they are such a bad person because they set a bad example? It IS okay to be overweight because it's something that no one can control. It doesn't matter if you count your calories....You are the weight you are, and you can never control it....It is okay to be skinny....It is okay to be in the middle....It is okay to be overweight....I learned this. I NEVER judge someone by what they look like, and for someone to say that they are unhealthy for the way they look is just disgusting in my eyes. |

Gothic Angel... I think you make some great points but your reference to people with eating disorders being "that stupid" disturbs me. Eating disorders aren't only an attempt to lose weight, they are much like many diseases linked to some people with obesity. They have very real genetic links. They've found chemical imbalances in the brain which make a person more prone to have eating disorders and family patterns. They've also found this disorder to fit into the OCD(obsessive compulisive disorder) family. I'm saying this stuff only as an FYI....not meant to criticize you, so please don't take it that way. |

actually GothicAngel... the people who stop eating to be skinny aren't being stupid.. but it is a problem.. they have found eating disorders to be a disease, a very bad mental disorder.. these girls actually see themselves as fat in the mirror.. they don't see any truth.. their eyes lie to them because of what other people's standards are, or what the media has shown.. so none of them are being stupid.. they have a problem, yes.. but not being stupid.. and R1.. u can put that up as many times as you want, but this post is still pretty rude..how are you suppose to know who can help it and who can't? |

Thank you, Kaja; I agree with you. It's not healthy to be super-fat, but it's not healthy to be anorexic, either. I seriously hope you aren't anti-fat people, because some people can't help it. And what's wrong with a chubby girl in a pageant? Nothing. Only a small-minded person would be angry about that. Are fat people not beautiful? There's some very pretty chubby girls; you don't have to be anorexic to be beautiful. And fat people shouldn't have to just hide away from the world, either; they can be every bit as successful as a slender person. I'm 5'4 and I'm a size 10; used to be a size 20. I don't consider myself fat at all, nor do I strive to make myself 90 pounds. At a size 8 I'll be happy. I think you just need to accept the fact that there will always be an overweight person in the midst and you need to get over it. If you aren't fat and are happy with yourself, then why do you care what other people do? |

These are my two cents. I agree with Emi, the movie is about being yourself but then again I can see where the author would think the movie is sending the message that being overweight is ok just cause the main character is in fact carrying a few pounds more than the average main gal. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with carrying a few extra pounds as long as it doesn't cause the person any health complications and they're happy the way they are. In my opinion the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. |

here's something i found interesting in my sociology class.. we're talking about how people grow, mature, and how they feel in their own body.. and there was a true or false question on our little practice packet.. the question states: "It is better to be really skinny than slightly overweight".. and answer was false.. its healthier to be slightly overweight than to be so skinny.. i'm speaking as someone who has gotten into the danger zone of weight thanks to my medications this last month or so with tons of doctors visits... she is only slightly overweight.. not the obese look that people fear.. so she's still pretty healthy.. and i'm glad they had her the weight she was.. it shows that you can do anything you put your mind to if you believe in yourself.. which was the whole point. |
