U.S. Considers Reinstating the Draft ~*KG*~

I heard this on the radio yesterday and I can't find any links anywhere, but they mentioned on the news (radio) that the U.S. Government is considering reinstating the draft for civilians because other countries are unwilling to help with Iraq and they also have North Korea to contend with.

What do you think of this? I was a bit surprised to say the least!

Date: 10/11/2003 5:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 15400    Oh boy! Here we go again. I don't think we should have a Draft! Because I have a friend who just went to basic traning for the army. I don't think I'd be able to handle him getting drafted into the war. Plus wouldn't that be interferring with our rights in one way or another. *sighs* The world has gone Mad.
Date: 10/11/2003 6:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I haven't heard this anywhere. The selective serviceact is a law and it is constitutional. There are many ways out, full time student, concientious objector etc. that no one's human rights are violated. Then again there's always the "run to Canada" option.
Date: 10/11/2003 6:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Well, if that's what they feel they have to do..
Date: 10/11/2003 7:21:00 AM  ( Admin-FA )   I haven't heard of this either... And BCAR is right, there is the whole Canada thing, heh.
Date: 10/11/2003 7:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I haven't heard anything about this. I suppose it is always an option. I know my husband is down to two soldiers in his platoon (he won't be coming home on that two week leave because of it). There is a severe shortage of man power because people are being sent home on assignments and there are no replacements. Still, I can only see their being a draft if there were an all out war in Korea.
Date: 10/11/2003 10:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    I wasn't surprised at all, ,been expecting it.
Date: 10/11/2003 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 1225    This has been a rumor since right after 9/11. It won't happen, if it does at all, until after the '04 election cycle.
Date: 10/11/2003 11:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Yeah if Bush gets in again that's what he'll do, but it would be political suicide to do it now. Well all those pro-war folks will have a chance to put their support into action. And those too old can always knit socks.
Date: 10/11/2003 11:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 58030    well, i figure, if they reinstate the draft, it'll be after the 04 election like ya'll said, it would be stupid to do so now, but i don't approve of it, especially, since i don't expect it to be over anytime soon, and right now a bunch of my friends are around the ages of 14-18, and that's not good, not to mention I'M nearing that age, and that's bad if he adds women to the draft, but i don't think forced soldiers would do as good as people who volunteered,
Date: 10/11/2003 11:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 1225    If they do reinstitute the draft, I'll be getting my notice early on. Seems to me, though, if Bush activates the draft it'd be tantamount to admitting that Iraq is a bigger job than he wanted it to be.
Date: 10/11/2003 3:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Actually I like Isreal's system. 2 year mandatory military service for everyone over age 18. It might give a lot of people a new perspective on life.
