On nights like these, when the moon seems near enough to touch, and the stars glisten like morning dew, not a thing can hide the creeping beast we knew as "the bogeyman" when we were children. As I speak, the campfire light cannot hide the fear that haunts my heart. Little more than an hour ago the eerie beast that made me an insomniac as a child proved its existence to me. Its sharp, nay, piercing red eyes glared at me with all the malice and hunger as a rabid dog, and its slimy flesh glistened like the scum pumped from a septic tank. I saw it, just as it had been twenty years ago, like a nightmare making a comeback during my adulthood.
I let out a scream, like I did in my younger years, but that did not put the beast off. It came closer, every step causing my heart to pang. I held my breath, and lied till I believed I was dreaming. The product of a thousand innocents phantasmic nightmares was so close that I could touch it if I felt so morbidly enclined. I felt its hissing exhale of soggy oxygen slither across my face. It was as if I was living out the nightmare of Satan himself, my heart on the edge of exploding. I now knew this was true, this was real, and I was near death. I let out all my fear, all my terror in a single howl, and fell away into a twisting sleep.
I awoke just now, at the edge of sanity. The beast had dissapeared, no more to be seen. I let out a sigh of relief, finding it to be a surreal nightmare. It was just a dream, which explained the loss of time I had experienced. But now I hear the rustling of the surrounding leaves, and I know I have been fooled my my conscience, as the air around becomes wet, and not the sharp grip on my shoulder is far too disgusting to be fake...
