does anybody know why people are riding their bikes in the road? as oppose to sidewalk?

Bikes aren't cars, they're not as fast..so they should be riden on the sidewalk along with the pedestrians shouldn't they? but where I live (or maybe where you live as well) I see a lot of bikers riding their bikes along with the cars, they're distinctively SLOWER, so it's like at one lane there's these cars moving at 50km/hr and at another, you got this bike.. and the snails crawling behind it. it's not like it's a deserted road, it's a regular traffic road with tons of cars and trucks and all that stuff. it's sort of like a person that doesn't have enough grands to buy a car, but have enought for a bike..and want to experience the road...or somethin

Date: 10/10/2003 2:10:00 PM  ( Admin-FA )   People are allowed to ride bikes in the road.. just as long as its over in the shoulder or the road.. I didn't think people were able to ride bikes on the sidewalk (Which makes sense..) since that is where people walk..
Date: 10/10/2003 2:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 38601    It's the law...if you are over the age of 12 you have to ride your bike in the street...don't ask me...I don't know who made it up
Date: 10/10/2003 2:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15904    I have never heard of that.. then why do SOME other people..older..still ride on the sidewalk?
Date: 10/10/2003 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    It's illegal in most places to ride bikes on the sidewalk, here they have a mini shoulder designated as a bike lane...
Date: 10/10/2003 2:18:00 PM  ( Admin-FA )   I don't know why they still ride their bikes on the sidewalk.. must not be that aware.. I didn't know about it until recently.
Date: 10/10/2003 2:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 62273    My mom always gets mad when she sees bikers on the road, and I don't blame her. The sidewalk is two feet away...
Date: 10/10/2003 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    Hmmm I have never heard of the law about bikes. I know here were I ride my bike though we don't have any sidewalks. On the highway we do but not on the other roads. I used to ride back and forth avoiding traffic or I would go over to the gravel. Now I just stay on the one side with the flow of traffic ... drivers can move. I am aloud to ride my bike ther ewhen I do so I do. It is too hard b/c you have to go up onto the road when the car does pass and when you go off the road you are riding on peoples lawns. In my opinion I don't see why people haveto be so rude when they drive. I am off the road to the shoulder as much as I possibly can and alot of drivers don't even move for you so they almost hit you.
Date: 10/10/2003 2:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 32806    That's where they are supposed to ride them.
Date: 10/10/2003 2:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 16155    I totally agree. I almsot a bicycle rider before becuz he was riding in the middle of the road, granted there were no sidewalks cuz it was in the middle of the dessert but he was in the MIDDLE of my lane, instead of off to the side. So I honked at him and he didnt move over so to get around him (I had to move into the other lane w/ traffic coming from the opposite direction but wouldnt u know it, right as I was about to a car came whipping around so I had to get back in my lane and stomp on my brakes to keep from hitting the stupid bicyclist and came literally inches from his back tire and all he did is look and kept goin along in the middle of the frickin lane! lol, k well thats my story.
Date: 10/10/2003 3:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    Where I live, it's against the law to ride your bike on the sidewalk. Most of the town has bike lanes on the edge of the streets and cars are not supposed to be in them. I usually ride between 15-20 MPH. That's way to fast to be on the sidewalks but I live in a bike friendly community. Most people don't have an attitude against bikes. Bikes are good for the environment as well as good exercise. I ride 25-30 miles per day. Maybe you should try walking in another persons shoes before you try to crap all over them.

Date: 10/10/2003 3:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15904    I live in canada, we don't have bike lanes here
Date: 10/10/2003 3:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    we have a really nice bike path that runs through three towns but to ride on the sidewalk is technically illegal. they don't usually bother little kids though because no one wants little kids riding in the street.
Date: 10/10/2003 3:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    actually bikes are NOT supose to be ridden on SIDEWALKS that is against the law in some places.... they are supose to be ridden on the side of the road in a bike lane or on the side of the road just off the sidewalk... having people ride on the sidewalk is VERY dangerous.... bikes are supose to ride with the flow of traffic
Date: 10/10/2003 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i'm also pretty sure vancouver has them also... i donno about all the smaller towns but my home town(northern BC) had them
Date: 10/10/2003 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    lighthouse victoria is COVERED in bike lanes..
Date: 10/10/2003 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    There aren't sidewalks where I live, so it's either in the street or in the grass.
Date: 10/10/2003 4:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 44321    we have some bike lanes here where I live and the folks that ride on the sidewalk at times about knock the walkers down. The bike messengers in town ride in the street along with the cars, the only thing I think is dangerous is when they swerve out in front of the buses and cars.
Date: 10/10/2003 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    that is easy, professionals have to, because when they race they are in the road, that is why there are white lines on the side of the road, sometimes it is easier to ride on the road then on the sidewalk that way people walking don't get in your way, the sidewalk is for people that are walking, that is why it is called a sidewalk.
Date: 10/10/2003 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    PS sometimes there isn't a sidewalk
Date: 10/10/2003 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    as most people have said you have to ride your bike on the road if you are old like 18 or something
Date: 10/10/2003 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 47166    Ok, just to sum it all up- Because they are wheeled vehicles, bicycles are NOT allowed on the pedestrian walkway for fear their bulk may injure the pedestrian traffic. They are supposed to ride in the shoulder, but are legally allowed to ride down the road. Most cities of any real size have bike-only paths to avoid inconvieniance.
Date: 10/10/2003 7:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 53054    where i live it is legal for children up to 12 years of age to ride on the footpath, but anyone older has to ride on the road otherwise it is illegal! i dont relaly see why this is a law lolz but hey some times you dont know why they bring these laws in! *hugz*
Date: 10/10/2003 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 22433    Small town BC here..bike lanes here. against the law to ride on the sidewalk.
Date: 10/10/2003 9:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    I heard from a cop that they're supposed to ride in the streets, not sidewalk.
Date: 10/11/2003 7:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 38256    Bikes aren't supposed to be on sidewalks. I think it's against the law in most places, sidewalks are for pedestriancs not vehicles.
