(10/10/03 - LONDON) — It's a case of the avant-garde going over-the-top -- or maybe down-the-drain.
A new art gallery has opened in a former public restroom in London.
Sinks have been converted into light fittings. The one remaining toilet bowl has become a fountain. And at Thursday's opening of The Toilet Gallery, a woman dressed as a soap dispenser was giving out fortune cookies.
The space showcases nontraditional work by young artists.
The gallery's founder says the building provided a "vital public service" for most of the last century. He says he wants to keep it in business in a different capacity well into the 21st century.
Instead of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the opening, artists snipped a line of toilet paper.
