I don't remember falling asleep, in the family room, but I woke up to a scream and loud cries. I didn't remember where I was or if I really was awake. It could have been a nightmare. My head was cloudy with sleep.
The screams were coming from the Dinning Room. It was my mother. She was crying loudly and put in a couple of screams now and then. I slowly snuck to the entrance way where my 2oldest sister, Loraine and Tamara, were sitting with my mother. It looked like my mother, but the sounds coming from her were not my mother. So unfamiliar. Loraine saw me standing there, so she came to my rescue. She kindly took me upstairs to my room and put me to bed next to my little sister Louise. She stayed with me for only a short period of time. I didn't understand what was going on, but Loraine said everything was going to be okay. I wanted to ask a million questions, but the only one was, "Where's Daddy?" She told me that he was at the hopsital, that was all she would share.
I must have fallen back into a sleepful slumber, because I awoke to the sun warming upon my face. I went to the window to see snow everywhere. It was so bright, I had to close my eyes to stop the tears from forming. I changed my clothes and headed down the stairs.
Tamara 16, Loraine 15, Trisha 13, Mikey 12, and myself 8, along with Louise who was 6 were all sitting at the table waiting for breakfast. Mom was not her bubbly self. She didn't talk at all. She just scrambled the eggs, fried the bacon, and made the toast. It smelled so good, but I just didn't feel like eating.
Mom came to the table and said, since I have you all together, I need to tell you something. "Your cousins were in a bad accident. Daddy went to the accident to help them out. They flipped their car over into the swamp a mile down the road. The neighbors saw the accident and took their tractor up to the swamp. Daddy was helping them, when the chain broke and well...........
