The Baby Factor (O'Reilly whines again!)

For anyone out there who listened to Bill O'Reilly's interview with Terry Gross on NPR, were you laughing as hard as I was?

The interview was about O'Reilly's new book, but as usual, the bully turned out to have very thin skin. When Terry Gross (the host of Fresh Air) asked some questions of O'Reilly and his past, he went nuts. It started with "Were you this hard on Al Frankin? I hope so." As if Al Frankin's interview is where the bar should be set for all future shows on NPR. Sure she asked him some tough questions. Sure she didn't do that so much with Frankin. It was a different interview, and Frankin is far less controversial.

It is like interviewing Napoleon, and Mr. Rogers (I know these are extremes that don't apply to these two, it is an example.) Of course you interview one differently than the other. It is a talk show, not journalism. As if O'Reilly treats all of his guests exactly the same.

He ended the interview after a tirade (not allowing Gross to speak) and never allowed her to read the quote from People magazine that set him off. When she tried to his response was "Why do you need to read that, you don't need to read that. Put that thing away, there is no reason for you to read that on the air." This is not a direct quote, but close.

He has even cut the microphone off on others during debates on his radio show so he could be the only one heard, and would not allow an open debate. Later when he was challenged to the same debate in a forum O'Reilly could not control, he refused.

Now here is the debate. Is Bill O'Reilly just a bully, who gets his jollies putting others down and having the last word, or is this the "fair and balanced" reporting he claims to have on his show, and Fox News?

Date: 10/10/2003 9:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Don't all news channels have these kind of shows? I personally don't like O'Reilly (arrogant, blowhard), but I wouldn't confuse him with a hard newscast either. I guess his is an opinion/talk show type thing just the same as Chris Mathews on msnbc.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:00:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    Again Kelly, what does this have to do with the debate. I will pose it to you again. "Now here is the debate. Is Bill O'Reilly just a bully, who gets his jollies putting others down and having the last word, or is this the "fair and balanced" reporting he claims to have on his show, and Fox News?"
Date: 10/10/2003 10:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    As if Terry Gross is unbiased.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:18:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    I never said she was did I?
Date: 10/10/2003 10:19:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    Now, since it seems to be going unseen, I will post the debate here yet again. "Now here is the debate. Is Bill O'Reilly just a bully, who gets his jollies putting others down and having the last word, or is this the "fair and balanced" reporting he claims to have on his show, and Fox News?"
Date: 10/10/2003 10:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I've never heard O'Reily claim fair and balanced. I've heard him claim no spin, and I've seen him shut down some pretty good liberal spin in my day. It's entertainment, just like the L.A. times.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Bully - No, anyone who goes on his show knows quite well what they are in for. it's not a hard news show and more than say Bill Mahr is. If potential guests don't know this then they are just stupid, which would reinforce other stated opinions about liberals.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    "Fair and Balanced" is one of his catchprahses, as it is for Fox News. He even brought it up in his long winded whine at the end of his interview on Fresh Air.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 1225    Bill O'Reilly makes his living being a blowhard. If he was a nice, fair man, would people listen to him?
Date: 10/10/2003 10:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    I am not just talking about his attacks on people that come on his show. He will pick on anyone he finds, they don't have to come on the show, but will whine and cry and resort to name calling when it comes to himself.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 35160    "a bully, who gets his jollies putting others down and having the last word",<~~ in a nutshell....
Date: 10/10/2003 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    "Fair and balanced" is the motto of fox news not O'Reily. And even at that it's still entertainment. Just like a Ted Kennedy speach.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Or California politics.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    Look, bring that up all you want, O'Reilly was the one that said it, not me. Take it up with him. He was the one that made the comparison between his show and Fresh Air, and claiming fair and balanced reporting. Now, I am not saying anything about him being a journalist, because he isn't, and we all know that.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 51173    Al Frankin is the point here - Frankin has written two "humor" books with left wing political themes. Frankin has said that all Republicans are racist, homophobes, and idiots - but did NPR ask tough questions about Frankin's beliefs and statements? No. To grill O'Reilly about his views, and not grill Frankin about his smacks of bias.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    The debate topic, "Is O'Reilly a Bully?" is highly subjective. It depends on who he's bullying. I personally get a kick out of it most of the time, because I dislike many of the people and causes he slams. But I never doubt for a second that if the money were right he'd be hugging Hillary and promoting Al Sharpton (who he actually gave a pretty fair interview to). It's almost impossible to determine where the news ends and entertainment begins. Everything is slanted.
Date: 10/10/2003 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Al Frankin = Washed out comedian who couldn't capitalize on his SNL stint, future Communist Party Chairman.
Date: 10/10/2003 11:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 1225    I suppose, BCAR, that now you're going to tell us that G.W. Bush is a good president and that the invasion of Iraq wasn't based on lies. Your right-wingedness is rather nauseating to me.
Date: 10/10/2003 11:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I guess I don't understand what you mean...The O'Reilly factor is a talk show, not hard news. He can claim whatever he wants i.e., fair and balanced, you can take it or leave it. I actually think HIS slogan is the "No spin Zone" because he is in the ***Opinion*** business and when I watch shows like that, I know they are ***opinions*** being spouted, I try not to confuse the two. Now I believe the Fox news slogan refers to the hard news.
Date: 10/10/2003 11:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 1225    Except for Fox News isn't hard news. It's Newsertainment. Same with CNN, and all the news programs, right down to the local news people. Nothing but newsertainment. Sad really.
Date: 10/10/2003 11:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    and I did say he was arrogant and a blowhard, so that should fit into the bully part of the debate.
Date: 10/10/2003 11:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    BCAR, You and your "right-wingedness" should be shipped off to a re-education camp. Sad really that they let people like you out into broad daylight. Gosh, it's easy being a liberal! You get to look down and people and feel good about it.
Date: 10/10/2003 12:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Yea I cracked on the asylum of California, bad bad me.
Date: 10/10/2003 12:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Either that or someone has a crush on Al Frankin.
Date: 10/10/2003 12:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 1225    Certainly not me. He's a bit old for me, and those glasses aren't very fetching.
Date: 10/10/2003 1:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    USM's G-rating does not permit me to really say what I think of O'Reilly. There's nothing "fair and balanced" about the bully Bill. I think I'll send him a crate of laxatives.
Date: 10/10/2003 1:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    I listened to both interviews. O'Reilly actually walked off the set before the interview ended. He has a thin skin indeed, considering how he treats his guests. Terry Gross is a courteous interviewer. I've been listening to her for years and I can not remember her ever having a guest that just gets up and leaves. The Jesse Ventura interview done several years ago was very interesting. O'Reilly evidently can dish it out but not take it. Poor baby...
Date: 10/10/2003 2:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    No I don't think he's fair and unbalanced and he certainly comes across as a bully. I don't think that an interview where the interviewer can turn off the interviewee is a proper interview. (phew! that's a tongue twister). O'Reilly always looks to me like a mind controlled man. His eyes are cold and hard.
Date: 10/10/2003 4:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I don't think he is really like that, they espcially pay him to act like that and it's just as scripted as wrestleing. When I was younger I read one of Bill O'Reilly's books. It was just boring. He isn't even entertaining when he doesn't have someone to argue against; I do like it when he argues people though. I guess it makes good tv, or else he would get cancelled.
Date: 10/10/2003 5:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    I meant to say 'balanced' not 'unbalanced' (gee my fingers will get me into trouble...oops). You're right Alien, but I wonder who's really paying him.
Date: 10/11/2003 7:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 36967    Bill O' reilly is fair. He tells it like it is. I think many show hosts should be like Oreilly.

Date: 10/12/2003 12:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    "The true measure of a man is his enemies" - BCARism
Date: 10/13/2003 8:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 17204    I love watching his show.
Date: 10/14/2003 11:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13974    "Gosh, it's easy being a liberal! You get to look down and people and feel good about it." Hey, isn't that wahat OReilly based his entire career on?
Date: 10/15/2003 7:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Pretty much, except he's getting paid for it.
