Date: 10/3/2003 12:17:00 AM From Authorid: 53054 Ok i can see that the teacher has asked you to decorate the computers....but did she say with anything, or said only certain things? (I am not taking any ones side in this) i am just asking that question! On the christian perspective...christians believe/d that dragons and their kin evil monsters. In all biblical refrences the dragon loses...Not only in the christian but also in the Middle East a dragon is seen as pure evil! I think that if some people dont like it then i spose you really shouldnt put it up, but i knwo if it was me i would not have a problem with them as i really like dragons, but i spose in certain cercimstances dragons should not be displayed for religion and other reasons! |

Some more info on dragons: The Egyptian god of darkness was portrayed as a serpent or dragon. Greeks perceived dragons as beneficial powers sometimes. The evil reputation was stronger and lasted longer than the other ideas. In Christian art, the dragon came to represent sin and paganistic and was therefore depicted prostrate beneath the heels of saints and martyrs. The dragon was a symbol of avarice in medieval European allegory while it represented friendliness in Japanese Zen art. Dragon forms varied, but were used as war symbols early on to inspire terror in the enemy. It became the symbol of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur. Later, it was officially incorporated into the armorial bearing of the prince of Wales and still remains on the Welsh flag. The dragons of the east managed to remain in prestige and remain beneficial creatures. The Chinese dragon became the symbol of the principle of heaven, activity, and maleness. It was also the emblem of the Imperial family. Both Chinese and Japaneses dragons were shown without wings. While Western society destroyed them, the Eastern world worshipped them. Date: 10/3/2003 12:36:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 26452 I know quite a bit about dragons, in some places they were evil, in others they were worshipped and some considered as gods. The main meaning I find for dragons, is the Symbol of wisdom, and strength. When I first started going there, I was told that we were able to express our beliefs, and Dragons are just a part of what *I* believe. And no, she just said not to have anything morbid on it, and my dragons are in no way morbid looking. |

Date: 10/3/2003 8:00:00 AM From Authorid: 53284 In this lifetime, you need to choose your battles. Is the picture of the dragon on your computer your "Line in the Sand"?. In other words is this something that you're really interested in fighting for? My opinion is that this seems really trivial. I have a bunch or silly stuff on my computer at work. I like all the things there. If something offended a person, I would take it down. In the big picture, I don't see that as something worth fighting for. Perhaps a bigger goal would be fighting for tolerence. I choose my battles carefully and rarely loose. Just my two cents worth. |
Date: 10/3/2003 9:46:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 26452 Thanks for your help guys, my mother talked with the superintendent, she seems to agree with us a bit more, but we're going to have a conferemnce with her. My main problem isn't just the Dragons, its the fact that after they've been up two weeks (one since last year) and all of the sudden, the day after my mother had to have a talk to her about some guest speaker who was Preeching religious stuff in class, my dragons are all of the sudden offensive. She does this ALOT and we are both sick of her getting away with it. |
Date: 10/3/2003 10:10:00 AM From Authorid: 54247 Sadly, this is life. You do need to adjust to your environment UNLESS IT IS SOMETHING ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL OR INJURES SOMEONE ELSE! That is life - and, you will need to adjust to people with different beliefs and lifestyles - you may disagree, but as long as it is not illegal or immoral, do not let it upset you - respect their differences and problems! Date: 10/3/2003 10:54:00 AM From Authorid: 54987 Oh dear! Is it a Christian school? If it is then you can't really do anything. I think she is over the top though. I'm sure most christians wouldn't have a problem with dragons. I mean they are mythical animals after all. |
Date: 10/3/2003 11:50:00 AM From Authorid: 36704 Most Charter Schools in Arizona are publicly funded and must be nonsectarian and follow the same rules as all public schools. If it is publicly funded they can't have religious speakers and you can't have a dragon that you say represents your religious beliefs. But, if you just like dragons they can't make you take it down. Find out if it's publicly funded, and if it is they report to a local public school district, the State Board for Charter Schools, or the Arizona State Board of Education, whoever sponsors them. If it's publicly funded and they're preaching religion just threaten to go above their heads if they make you take down the dragons. |
