No Goodbye

Ascending stairs, Goodnight Bug
No goodbye
Morning light, gone to work
An airport departure
No goodbye
Desperate call, I love you
Encompasses a life time of walks and play
No goodbye
Dad

This describes the last 2 weeks of my father’s life. I have no memory of the last time I saw him alive. I went upstairs to pack for my flight back to college the next day. He always woke me up to say goodbye in the morning. That morning, he did not. I caught my plane back to Texas. Less than 2 weeks later, knowing he was ill but not how sick, I followed intuition and called him at the hospital to tell him I loved him. The call lasted about 5 minutes. He died that night. I believe he knew he would not see me again when I got on the plane. We never said goodbye but did say we loved each other.
