Horizontal Gene Transfer, anyone? PLEASE!

Okay, for some odd and crazy reason, I signed up to take a biotechnology class this semester. So for this evening's assignment (well part of it anyway) I have to "explain why it is at least theoretically possible to undertake horizontal gene transfer among living things". Now here's the problem: The textbook from which this question comes only mentions that biotechnology is able to break nautral barriers and allow genes to be moved between the five kingdoms of organisms. Our professor has not mentioned the topic AT ALL and every website I've looked at so far assumes that my brain has been through at least seven years of college (this is my first semester). In other words, they use a lot of very big words that my poor little brain cannot comprehend. So I turn to, fellow USMers, to help me out. Can anyone explain to me how it IS possible to transfer genes among living things? Or point me to a website that can help (without overloading my brain)? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
