I always wonder why people attack pornography yet they leave primetime TV alone. Which is worse for a child to witness, two people making love, or two people trying to kill each other, or beating each other up? Where's the outrage about shows like WWF(WWE?) which glorify violence (yes, I know it's fake, but that's not the point). There is absolutely nothing wrong with the sex act. It is natural and almost universal in nature (there are species which reproduce in different ways). Once we stop villainizing sex and teach our children that it is a wholesom expression of love between two consenting adults, things will be much better in regards the problems with youth sex. But as for disseminating it on cell phones... who is that addicted to porn that they can't wait and go to the dirty book shop on the corner, or until they get home to their computer? So I agree with the author that the whole porn-phone concept is ridiculous, but I aver that the First Amendment must always be broadly and liberally interpreted even if the speech (read: expression) is offensive to us. In closing, the one sure fire way of protecting your children from exposure to porn is to monitor them at all times LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO. I agree with the PDFA ads which state that parents are the anti-drug. Parents are also the anti-porn, the anti-violence, and the anti-racism. Most everything a child learns about behavior is learned from his or her parents. For example, my parents never, ever drank, not even on new years (yes, they are squares) so I never developed the behavior/attitude that drinking alcohol was desirous. Sorry about all this ranting, but I like to rant!   |

In this case I think decency should come first. Someone argued that watching violence is worse than watching two people making love. Well I agree entirely. HOWEVER! There is a difference between 'making love' and hardcore porn, which also can be violent and be very unloving. We can never have free speech in the proper sense of the word. Free speech when it doesn't harm a person is fine. When it is used to incite violence, it should not be allowed. I don't see why the author had to put religion into the post i.e. the use of heathen and the ten commandments. If you ask most pornographers if they have a religion, you'll find they do indeed. Indeed they probably make good use of that in their work. Stop bashing non-christians and people who believe in our great Constitution. I suppose this will get deleted.  |

With rights come responsibilities. That is what everyone seems to forget. You can have your right to free speech, or any other right that you are entitles to. It is up to the individual though to insure that the exercise of their rights do not violate the rights of others. That is responsibility. As was stated earlier, all one has to do is turn on the television to view widespread violence, murder, blood, gore, promiscuity, as well as many other things evil, and that is just on the news channels. Prime time television is even worse. Also, when was the last time you took a look at some of the video games that kids play on the computers or gaming systems? Some of them are worse than the television. It is not up to the judges to decide the moral decency of individuals. There are laws in place which do cover indecent conduct under certain circumstances. Those laws are in place to protect the public, while still allowing individuals varying degrees of their rights. If you do not like certain features of the new phones, the amswer is simple, do not subscribe to them.  |

Some people CHOOSE to take it a bit too far. Blaming the internet for children being exposed to pornography is a bit warped, too. Parents are responsible for what their children do and see. They, in turn, are responsible for the fact that their children are exposed to unacceptable subject matter at an early age. Blaming unseen entities for the shortcomings of society has become far too commonplace these days. If you don't like the Playboy channel, don't order it. If you don't like a song on the radio, change the station... and if you don't want porn on your cell phone, I'm sure they'll allow you to block it just as easily as you can block roaming. BCAR, just when I begin to thimk there is little we can agree on, you somehow amaze me. With electronics technology like it is today, it is very simple for parents to control their children's access in most electronic formats. If parent's will take the time to learn a little about their computers, they will find they can also see what kind of sites their kids access. The best form or protection for kids though is a parent that cares enough to take the time to KNOW what their child is doing. |

Sounds like you first need to have a phone capable of receiving these images, and very likely would have to subscribe to them (despite receiving any 'inticement' free-bees), so perhaps NOT buying your kid a capable phone is an answer. Also seems perhaps another course of action would be to, as BCAR suggests, try something mindblowing different...try something incredibly stunning...try something TOTALLY off the wall like actually informing your children and taking some active responsibility for raising them instead of pointing the finger at all those nasty evils out there leading your poor innocent misguided unprotected cherubs astray. One would have to wonder why a kid would need a cell phone in the first place. Growing up, we got along just fine without them, and if an emergency did pop up, we just went to the nearest pay phone. Last time I checked, there was still an abundance of pay phones out there. |
