Outrageous News:Black Woman Offered White Foot ~Zim Matrix660

Tue August 26, 2003 10:24 AM ET LONDON (Reuters) - A black woman due to have her lower leg amputated was offered a white false foot and told she would have to pay extra if she wanted one that matched her skin, she said Monday. Ingrid Nicholls, 46, said she was told at the state-funded hospital in Oxford, central England, that she would have to pay about $4,725 for a prosthetic limb that matched her skin color.

The cost of the white foot would have been covered by the National Health Service.

"If you've got to have an amputation, you should be allowed to have an artificial limb in the color that is relevant to your skin," she told Reuters.

"It's not cosmetic. Who would want to look like a freak, having one white leg and one black one -- nobody."

A spokeswoman for the Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority said there had been an internal misunderstanding over funding and that the health service would pay for Nicholls to be fitted with the appropriate false limb.

"This has caused a real problem for this patient and we need to sort it out," the spokeswoman said. "We are sorry for the upset and hurt that has been caused."

This woman should sue for descrimination! How dare the insurance not cover a prosthetic leg of her skin tone and cover white prosthetics! That's just not right!

Date: 8/26/2003 4:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 52363    straight up! i know i would sue. thats wrong and just ignorant....
Date: 8/26/2003 4:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    Because white prosthetics are more common, they are mass produced. It's like why insurance covers contacts but not vanity contacts with cat pupils.
Date: 8/26/2003 4:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    I'd rather have one that wasn't the right color and be able to walk than to be upset about it.
Date: 8/26/2003 4:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 20575    That's not fair. Mass production or no mass production, if someone has to go through that type of surgery, they sure as heck should have the right to whichever limb they want.
Date: 8/26/2003 4:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 20575    I meant to add- it's not like she's asking for something outrageous. All she wants is for one leg to match the other! Is that TOO MUCH TO ASK?!? This kind of thing angers me.
Date: 8/26/2003 8:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 56971    yes paint it,, but i see no big deal,
i saw this on the news and the white leg looks good
Date: 8/26/2003 8:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62074    yeah, but that's sort of defeating the purpose to get prosthetic companies to make more different flesh tones of prosthetics...it's all about fairness.. besides the paint would chip off and then they'd have a speckled leg...
Date: 8/27/2003 4:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 59163    i've got some paint in my shed they could borrow.
Date: 8/27/2003 4:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    We had a neighbor once that did paint his prosthetic leg bright blue and it really was an eye catcher. Most artificial limbs are not going to even come close to looking like anything but an artificial limb b ut the lady does make a valid point. It should not have cost her any different in price.
Date: 8/27/2003 6:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 59163    i met a guy with a blue titanium rod once. he had a shoe on the end of it. it was pretty interesting really

Date: 8/27/2003 6:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    She should be entitled to a matching leg of her own color without any extra cost to her. I do not think it is necessary to sue though, since she now is to get what she wanted!
Date: 8/27/2003 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 8184    That is SO disciminatory towards this lady. It's not fair to have one skin tone colour paid for by insurance and others not. This world isn't all one race! At least she got what she wanted though.
