Night Visitors II

The couple entered the house cautiously as Bob kept pushing the dogs back with his feet.

“Don’t mind them.” Bob said, “Their bites much worse than their bark”

Jim and Tayla both looked worried as Bob’s attempt at humor fell flat.

In the candlelight, both Jim and Tayla looked exceedingly pale.

“Come on into the living room and have a seat.” Bob said as he gestured towards the couch. As they walked towards the couch Bob couldn’t help but notice the distinctive bulge of pregnancy on Tayla’s slim figure.

They sat on the couch and nervously glanced at each other.

“Well, this storms turning into a real gully washer,” said Bob. “I don’ t know if your help will be able to get over Low-water bridge. When we have storms like this it can take 24 hours or more for the water to recede so traffic can get in to this part of the county. But don’t you two worry a bit. I’ve got plenty of food and the wood stove will keep us warm. You can stay in the guest room if you need to.”

Jim and Tayla kept glancing at each other. Thunder crashed again and the visitors both jumped.

There was a awkward silence then Bob asked “What kind of cell phone do you folks have?” “Mine doesn’t have service out here. I have to get much closer to the city before I can make any calls. Do you have one of those new camera phones?”

Jim looked at Bob and said “It’s built into our vehicle”

The dogs settled in around the wood stove but they kept their eyes focused on the visitors

Tayla looked even more pregnant to Bob. It was almost like she was swelling up right in front of his eyes.

Jim noticed Bob’s glance and said “Her time approaches”

Now it was Bob who looked nervous. “Can I do anything?” he asked.

“It will be alright,” said Tayla “I have whelped before and it is said that the second time is much easier”

“Whelped?” thought Bob

to be continued.
