Thunder cracked again and static interrupted the TV as the storm continued to rise in ferocity. Each gust of wind made the house quiver as the rain pelted the windows. Bob filled the lamps with oil and got the candles and matches out. The chances of power remaining on to his little house in the country seemed slim.

Lightning flashed again followed immediately by the boom of thunder. The power abruptly went out. “That was a close one,” thought Bob. The dogs barked nervously every time the thunder sounded. He lit the oil lamps and a few candles. The wood stove was already stoked up and would keep the house warm throughout the night. It was just another stormy night in the country. He settled down on the futon in front of the woodstove to try and read a book of short stories by Frank Allen by lamplight. Just the right setting for reading horror stories he thought.

The rain, being blown by the wind, slammed against the windows like someone was throwing buckets of water on them. The dogs were agitated and couldn’t seem to settle down. Then Bob noticed the hair on the dog’s necks was standing up. He had the creepy feeling like someone was watching him.

There was a loud knock on the door. Startled, Bob leaped off the futon. The dogs all started barking like they were possessed. Bob went to the front door and looked out the peephole. A young well-dressed couple stood there getting drenched by the storm.

Bob pushed the dogs back with his feet, opened the door and welcomed the young couple into his simple home.

“Come in, come in, don’t worry about the dogs, they won’t hurt you.” Said Bob.

The couple entered Bob’s house and the young man began to speak.

“I’m Jim and this is Tayla,” he said. “Our vehicle was damaged by the lightning. We have called for assistance but it will be sometime before they can get here. Would it be alright if we waited here?”

The dogs circled around behind Bob and continued growling their disapproval softly.

“Why of course you can wait here.” Said Bob. “Make yourself at home”

to be continued.
