I think the main thing to remember in these situations is to remain calm. You cannot prepare for every eventuality, bt if everyone went to the store and tries to buy loads of food then there wouldnt be enough to go around. We have that every time a snow storm is predicted here in the UK and it always causes grief. |

Another reason to buy ahead a little at a time to store away. |

You have done a better job of food storage than I have. I was actually thinking about that yesterday. My family isn't prepared for anything. Everyone should have those things to prepare for an emergency so no one has to rush around last minute at the stores trying to get the things that they need but a lot of times it's all sold out. we're not fully prepared for that.. it hit our town, but for some reason the power at our house was still on (thank god!)... but we went to the store when the power was out and bought stuff that we don't have to put in the fridge or anything, and we made sure we bought stuff that we didn't need to cook. someone also told us how to use our stove when the power is off. so.. |

We wouldn't be as prepared as much as we would like. Sounds like you are ready for anything! Which is good, you just never know what can happen. . |

Yes, my parents are so "technologically impaired" well except for having computers, we could survive not having power for quite some time. We have a generator and we live on a farm so if times came tough enough we could slaughter, smoke, and cook our own cattle. We even have a well, if there were no water we could get the water out of the well and heat the bacteria out of it. |

Well I live in the south and I know it could just as easily happen here too. I decided to go out and stock up on canned goods. At least you can still eat and drink the juices in the can too.I worry about all the little babies that need milk and formula and the elderly. It sure makes you think but why is it that human nature makes us wait until something happens to think about this kind of possibility? |

ALways good to have powdered milk or formula on hand for those times, with drinking water. |

well like we live near farms and all too, the guy who lives behind us raises his own cattle, alien just made me think of it, and i'm sure we know how to cook it, our water comes from a well, cleaner than the stuff in the bottles i'll tell ya that, (which reminds me DON'T buy the water they just make money offa u, buy milk by the gallon and then keep water in them after washing em, it's recycling, save that environment! i know some people keep a barrel for saving rainwater i think they have grates and stuff over it to keep the insects and stuff out.... i mean our town would help everyone out soo.. all those city slickers that moved out here.... they might have some problems but everyone else'll probably be fine.... |

Not all milk jugs are made to keep for a period of time without leaking. Walmart's are bad about leaking. |

I live in Michigan but far enough from Detroit that we only had about a 2 yr outage from this. I live in a rural area and we've lost power 7xs this year. One time it lasted for 2 days and I was going crazy. It was so cold that we had to get a hotel room. Losing power is always scary and you're right, we should think ahead for the possibility of this being a serious outage. Good post |

yes, but I live in Florida, where we always have Hurricane Kits. Plus I have practiced food storage for years. |
