Man charged with former wife's murder

A Marion County grand jury today indicted Steven D. Halcomb for murder, even though the body of his former wife, who he is accused of killing, has not been found.

Halcomb, 38, has been charged with the murder of Karen Jo Smith, who was last seen Dec. 27, 2000, in her Indianapolis home.

Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said he realizes this will be a difficult case to prove.

"I accept the challenge because my job is to go after criminals who think they are clever by attempting to hide their tracks," said Brizzi.

Smith was last seen about 10:30 p.m. on the day she disappeared. Family members said she was asleep in a recliner chair that used to occupy one corner of her home. Halcomb was sitting on the couch, watching television.

In the morning, Smith and Halcomb were gone, as was Halcomb's car.

He and his car resurfaced two weeks later when he turned himself in after violating his parole for a 1995 drug conviction.

Smith's family and friends have long shared the unwavering belief that Halcomb is responsible for her disappearance.

Brizzi said Halcomb did not respond to a subpoena to testify before the grand jury and has not been to work this week. Police are looking for him.
