The cat hater down the road.

A friend of mine recently moved into a quiet neighborhood. She has two cats which have always been both indoor\outdoor. About two weeks ago she decided that the cats could finally venture outside. Not a week later they disapeared. After two days of searching and putting up posters she was approached by one of her neighbors who lived a few houses down. The man advised her to check all the local shelters because his nextdoor neighbor has a strong hatred for cats and does not want them on his yard. He informed her that the man has a humane trap in his backyard which he baits with tuna. Once a cat is caught inside he removes the cat's collars and such then calls animal control to dispose of them.

Sure enough both cats were found at the local shelter, luckily in time. The shelter they were picked up at only keeps animals for 72 hours after that they are put down. It cost her $100 to get both her animals back. (Both were also missing their tags) She confronted the neighbor with the cat traps immediately, he denied nothing. Telling her he has every right to do so because her cats were on his lawn. Hmmmm... well maybe he shouldn't bait his yard with tuna then. Not to mention he removed their licenses reducing the chance of their safe recovery.

Unfortunately I don't think theres anything she can do, legally. Any opinions or advice would appreciated. Especially since now her cats know that theres tuna to be found in the guys yard!

Date: 8/13/2003 6:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    she could just keep the cats indoors if she doesn't want that to happen again
Date: 8/13/2003 6:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46704    True... but he's luring cats on to his yard with food
Date: 8/13/2003 6:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    I dont know I would call the animal services for sure...maybe they could make him remove the traps?? She could have a neighbor like mine though she will poison the cats in teh neighborhood...of course we cant prove it is her who is doing it but she has told me before if my cat comes in her yard it will end up dead so I try to keep my cats inside or let them out only while she is not home
Date: 8/13/2003 6:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    Cause you know there are no laws(that I know of) that require a cat to stay in his yard or to be on any type of leash
Date: 8/13/2003 6:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46704    And removing thier tags, so he can report them as strays.
Date: 8/13/2003 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    Honestly if it was me I would go remove the traps myself while the guy is gone but that is jsut me
Date: 8/13/2003 6:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46704    Well that would be trespassing and stealing. Seeing how she just confronted him on it.. I think he would figure that out. Of coarse he would need proof to do anything.
Date: 8/13/2003 6:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    many counties have laws that say cats must be kept in the owners yard, at least he's not killing them and he is trapping them humanely
Date: 8/13/2003 6:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46704    Laws according to the shelter require only that cats be licensed there are no leash and harness laws regarding cats in the city which she lives. Of coarse the lady at the shelter may or may not know what she's talking about.
Date: 8/13/2003 6:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 14754    well iam sure the animal shelter has info on the man calling about the cats right?...this person does have rights, and i would call her local spca
Date: 8/13/2003 6:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46704    Yes, the shelter did provide an address where the cats were picked up at.
Date: 8/13/2003 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    The animal shelter probably already knows all about this guy but doesnt care much since when someone DOES recover their animal they are paying the shelter big buck..More money for them and more business for them.
Date: 8/13/2003 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    That is true what LadyLuck says the best idea would be to keep the cats inside til the guy leaves then make sure they stay in the yard...
Date: 8/13/2003 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    He could probably be done for fraud but unless their was proof you can't do much. I hate cats myself but there's nothing that a quick smack on the butt won't fix with a cat.
Date: 8/13/2003 9:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 58030    OMG something similar is happening to my friend, her little kitten was laying on this lady's step the lady comes out and steps on it (this is a BIG lady) and the cat like scratches here a bunch and runs off, and okay so she calls animal control, the lady is now setting traps and stuff, and all this fudge, and it's ridiculous,
Date: 8/13/2003 10:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    O_O That is just plain WRONG!
Date: 8/14/2003 4:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 7672    If the guy is out of the house, put a strong smelling cat-repellent at the entrance of the cages. You can get these in any drugstore. If she keeps her cats well fed, they will choose to eat at home and stay away from what they find stinking.
Date: 8/14/2003 5:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    I know someone who does this and I've told them off numerous times...
Date: 8/14/2003 11:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    I might be tempted to put a brick through his window.... Just kidding. We all need to be socially responsible.
Date: 8/14/2003 12:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    LOL @ WildBob I was thinking the same thing...that would be hard to restrain myself cause I love kitties I just dont understand how someone can be so darn mean especially to such a cute creature
