Song Remakes

I'm getting so sick and tired of bands who cover songs and don't do them justice. What gets me is I've heard some half way decent covers of songs, and liked them. Then there are some where I want to throw my radio/tv out the window. I just heard the Mariah Carey of "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" which was done by Def Leppard originally. I usually LIKE Mariah but that was one song she shouldn't have touched. Same with the Leann Rimes version of "Purple Rain", loved the Prince version, hated Leann's Yet another song I heard recently was "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" I HATE HATE HATE Avril Lavigne's version, but loved the Guns 'n' Roses version. This is also true of "cover bands" that I heard locally. There were some songs they did great, but some that were better left untouched. Are there any songs you personally love that have been re-made and you hate the new version? Any covers you like? How do you feel about artists who don't seem to want to do original songs anymore?

Date: 8/13/2003 4:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3688    i like leann..but not on that song....and i'm sorry NO ONE can sing Patsy Cline other than Patsy Cline lol
Date: 8/13/2003 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    Well actually Guns and Roses Knocking On Heavens Door was a remake of Dylan's original of that one. Just like Pearl Jam's Last Kiss was a remake of Wednsday's remake of the Cavilers original and Without You by Mariah was a remake of the Neilsson original. and than there is Lady Marmalade originally done by LaBelle
Date: 8/13/2003 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 22992    I can go both ways in this BIG time. It is a very personal subject. I love some of the new remakes like White Stripes version of Seven Nation Army, its fantastic. I ALSO HATE AVRIL'S REMAKE, she ruined a perfectly good song. Great post
Date: 8/13/2003 4:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3688    yes, i know it was a remake of the bob dylan song, what i meant was i like THEIR remake lol
Date: 8/13/2003 4:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    LOL I think for the most part people like the version that they hear first for exemple I like the middle version of Last Kiss
Date: 8/13/2003 4:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 3688    You could be right, lol though i like SOME remakes..i usually like the originals because i heard them first....
Date: 8/13/2003 7:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    I do like most cover versions. I love the Gunners Version of "Since I don't have you". I also love Ugly Kid Joe's version of "Sweet Leaf" which was originally done by Black Sabbath. I also love Reel Big Fish's version of "Take on me" which was originally done by Aha. I also love Limp Bizkits version of Faith which was done originally by George Michael. I could go on forever.
Date: 8/14/2003 12:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 36766    ppl should NOT do remakes of any Def Leppard song, I heard one a few months ago, Love Bites, they turned it into techno, oh my did it urk me...some remakes I do like, others are just horrible...Marilyn Manson remade "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics (however it's spelled) and "Tainted Love" by someone, I forget their name, but he did those good
Date: 8/14/2003 11:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 62222    Some covers are okay, but I have heard songs messed up so bad it is pathetic. Example: Sheryl Crow and the remake of "Sweet Child O' Mine". That was soooo bad. Umm, I do like Gravity Kills remake of "Personal Jesus" and I like Rammstein's version of "Stripped". I HATED that remake of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that that that rap artist did years ago in like '95. And I am also pretty irked that Maria went there with Def Leopard. She only wishes she had their talent.... Oh, I also like Dope's remake of "you spin me round"...<regretfulhalo>
Date: 8/14/2003 3:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 61912    I have to agree with the fact that if a band is going to cover a song they should take the song in a new direction and not just cover for the sake of nostalgia, or to gain recogniton through someone elses work. My favorite cover is "All Along the Watch Tower" by Jimi Hendrix which was originally by Bob Dylan. Thats a perfect example of how a cover song should be approached. If you play them back to back they are quite different, Jimi put so much of himself into that song. What I hate is when country singers cover old rock and roll songs, especailly songs by the Rolling Stones. I feel in the end the cover song should be greater work and improvement over the original, and should be more popular than the original........
