You're right..it's a good philosophy and even if it is "old" it can't hurt to have it restated from time to time.. |

I agree, but also disagree strongly. Here's why: Shakespeare once wrote "There is no such thing as good or evil, but thinking makes it so." Or something like that. Now yes, "good" or "evil" as most people define the terms in their minds, is not a reality. HOWEVER, there is such a thing as being asleep to reality, or like Spiritualists like to put it, being spiritually asleep. What does that mean? It means you are guided strictly by your own thought associations, thus emotions, every minute of every day. You go about life reacting to all events according to how your mind decided to react to them. Now, the mind has one general job, and one only: to keep you alive. Period. How does it do this? It associates things together with pain or pleasure. Pleasure means Life to the mind, and pain means the road to death. The brain works extremely hard to keep you from pain, and to follow pleasure. Early man used this to a great advantage. However, today, there are many things in our society that chemically give the brain pleasure, thus making it think that by continuing it, it is promoting life for you, when in reality, it could be promoting a slow death. The brain was not made for a lot of stuff we go through today. Yet there is a higher awareness above mechanical thought. This higher awareness is what sees the dangers in things like smoking, promiscuous sex, insulting people, etc. Without the higher awareness, people simply live on what's pleasurable (the next cigarette), so in that regard; in the regard that people can be blind to a lot of the Truth that exists, there is "evil." In other words, "good" can be defined as being aware of ALL that is TRUE about something even if the mechanical mind only sees a small part of it, and "evil" is that blind spot that the mind has. See? |

Very true. I see good an evil as one. Without evil, what purpose is there to be good? Without good, what purpose is there to be evil? They need each other, despite the fact they always conflict. Kewl post |

hmmm... i wouldnt use the word "evil" ... "bad" sounds better too me, evil is too strong. i think that those ppl that smoke, drink, and commit crimes know that it is a little bad at least because why do the criminals do it in secretive means? or go into hiding afterwards? because they know what they did is bad and that they will get into trouble for it. And then why do ppl who smoke and drink not let their kids do it? if they dont see anything wrong with it, why cant they let them drink it and other ppls children and whoever else? because they no it is bad to some extent, but they just do it for pleasure... |

I know I'm asking for it, but I don't agree with this. This line of thinking is called Cultural Relativism. There is no right or wrong but what each individual culture dictates. So, if I come from a culture where brutal mass murder is acceptable and come to the US and commit brutal mass murder of your family, it is wrong to you, but not to me. Is it wrong? If there is no standard for telling what is and what is not good to do to someone else, how can we tell? And how can you judge me for brutally murdering your family? As you can see, there must be some standard for good and bad, or anarchy would reign. Also, if anyone is interested, I made a post about good and evil on this msg brd. Audria |

Hmm, this is a good post. I believe that without evil you do not know the nature of good because you have no knowledge of what the other is. There are two sides to every coin and man is the only beast who has been foolish to assume other wise. Although I agree that some people are prone to evil, I think their minds do convince them that things are okay, because as long as they are having fun then nothing else matters. But that's a second side just like anything else...<regretfulhalo> |
