Today I was down in our basement and I heard a meowing. We have two kittens but I knew it wasn't them so I went outside to see where it was coming from and there inside our window well type thing (I guess thats what you would call it :P) there was a teeny tiny kitten laying there. It's eyes aren't even open yet and the umbilical cord is still attatched. We have plenty of cats that rome around our area but they aren't ours, so I'm guessing it is one of theirs. We put some cat food out so we could tell if the mother had been there or not and the cat food was still there hours later. We called our neighbor whom we got our kittens from because once while the kittens were only a week old she thought the mother had left. She called the vet who told her to get this stuff to feed them. So she brought down the leftover formula(the mother cat ended up coming back) called Nurse-Maid. I have fed the kitten once, then my parents told me to put it back outside to see if the mother comes. We put two warm water bottles(which the vet said to do to keep it warm) in there which she lays up against and we also have a blanket laying in there because the poor little thing is cold to the touch. My parents said if it wasn't any warmer before we went to bed we would bring it inside. So here we are with a poor little kitten that I have to get up with every TWO hours tonight and probably for the next SIX weeks and feed with a little eye dropper. I'm willing to do it though if it means the kitten will live! Do you guys have any advice? Is this what we should be doing? Please help!! hehe

Date: 8/3/2003 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 39737    sounds good to me. But remember if you are doing it right, the kitty will get stronger and it wont be as difficult to care for. Keep in touch with the vet for advice, and buy a book on caring for kittens. Good Luck !

Date: 8/3/2003 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 58078    Usually once a human touches an animals baby the mother will not come back...being you guys were already around it and touched it, I have a feeling its all your responsibility now and the mother will not be back.

Date: 8/3/2003 4:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    Yea IP...thats what I wondered about. I bet its all up to me (and my family) LoL! Thanks!
Date: 8/3/2003 5:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I've had to wean hawks, dogs and kittens. It is difficult but rewarding. Sometimes the mothers abandon them or won't touch them for some reason. That's when human-intervention is needed. Good luck and I think it's sweet that you're doing that.
Date: 8/3/2003 5:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    Awww! Thanks You Choose! I hope it works out. Would it be okay if I msged you sometime if I need help?
Date: 8/3/2003 5:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    awww keep it warm turn on your heater and put it near by it so it can have the warmth it can't regulate it's own body temperature... poor thing... keep a close eye on it
Date: 8/3/2003 5:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    I know Midnightly. I don't think my parents would appreciate me turing on the heater though! LoL! But I am doing as much as I can to keep it warm. Thanks!
Date: 8/3/2003 5:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    heating blanket is one thing. Set it on meduim. The bottle you can alwayd tape to an edge on the blanket as the kitten will feel its way over to it. We used an old inner tube for a car tire for this prupose though. Just place the pad inside of the ring, tape the bottles at a low enough angle for the kitten to find it and build the site up with towels to make it easir for the kitten(s) to find it. Actually you would want to coral them into an small area no bigger than 1 fooot by 1 foot with the bottle(s) inside. This means that you can get some rest in the middle of the night. I mean reall do youthink the mother cat pops her teat into the kittens mouth? Nope the kitten must search and learn where it is at fast. Try it it works for us when we have this problem.
Date: 8/3/2003 5:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    Thanks Joe! I have it in a pretty small box type thing with the bottle in it.

Date: 8/3/2003 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    What Smoknjoe said is probebaly the best thing. I would try to rig something up so that he/she wont have to wait for you feed him. I think it is great you are doing this I have done this twice one time the cat did not make it through the night the other time he did and he lived to be a few years old.
Date: 8/3/2003 7:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    I dont know if dogs are the same as cats..but my dog had gull sp? stones and she wouldnt feed her pups, so my mom had to take care of them by putting a tube down there throat into there stomachs and connecting a syringe filled with puppy formula to it and feed them that way..maybe the best way to do it would be to give the kitten to the vet, because 2 of 3 puppies died from that litter and the vet knows more about what they are doing..good luck!

Date: 8/4/2003 8:16:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    Really Medusa? Hmm...I might just have to look for one. I know its going to be hard but the reward will be great! Thanks!

Date: 8/12/2003 6:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58427    Sad news guys...The little kitty died a few days ago We did all that we could do...I think she was just so young and so small...
Date: 1/16/2013 1:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I tried so hard to save one about that size. Somebody had left it in a box at the gas station. Cruel people!! It ended up choking on the kitty formula from the medicine dropper and died. It was so sad!
