LANSING, Michigan (AP) -- A graduate student is accused of hacking into the University of Michigan's computer system and using information from more than 60 students and professors to forge e-mails and get copies of final exams.
In one case, Ning Ma, 24, is accused of sending an e-mail from a professor's account to a female student, telling her that she was failing. Ning then offered to tutor the woman in hopes of obtaining sexual favors in return, the attorney general's office said. The student rebuffed Ning's attempts.
Ning was arraigned Friday in Ann Arbor and was being held on $100,000 bail. He did not have an attorney with him and was not allowed to enter a plea, said Sage Eastman, a spokesman for the attorney general's office.
He faces charges including eavesdropping and unauthorized access to a computer, computer system or network. If convicted, Ning faces up to five years in prison. He is a citizen of China and has a student visa.
From August 2002 to April 2003, Ning accessed other people's e-mail accounts and private network storage areas and used a program to capture keystrokes entered by another person, said Attorney General Mike Cox.
Ning also canceled a job interview for one student, obtained a credit card number of another student and got into network storage areas of two professors, giving him access to final exams and answer sheets, the attorney general's office said. It did not appear that Ning, a financial engineering major, made any charges on the credit card, Eastman said.
In a statement, the university said it takes the case seriously and has been working closely with authorities.
"We are committed to providing a highly secure computing environment for our users," the university said.
