I think the real meaning is the exact opposite of what it seems to be on the surface. The key is the double negative. I knocked out the "never" and "not" to make a positive statement, substituted "otherwise" with "different" (sounds logical), and broke it up into sentences. This is what I found: "Be what you would seem to be." Or, "Be what YOU think you are to be, regardless of other people." The rest, I think, can read like this: "Imagine yourself differently than what it might appear to others. What you were, or even might have been, was the same [not 'different'] as what you had been, even if you had appeared to them to be different." Sound logical? I'd like to read the real meaning of this sometime.  |
