For Those Who Have Had Braces--

I was wondering if you or someone you know who has had braces and has had them off for a while has had any luck with keeping their teeth straight. It seems impossible! I got my braces off about 2 years ago, they shifted some (even though I WAS wearing my retainer so I had to get a special retainer to get them straight again. I was surfing the net on some info. and it says if you want to have straight teeth for life you have to wear your retainer every night for the rest of your life (or atleast most nights). Is it worth it? I mean I like having straight teeth (even though mine weren't all that bad to begin with) and I guess it's not terrible to have to wear a retainer..but it's just a big hassle. Anyways if you have any input please reply.:-)

Love, Lauren

Date: 7/31/2003 6:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 60945    lol I had braces for about a year and a half, I got my retainer a few months ago. Since then, I've stepped on the top one and almost lost the bottom one twice LOL! personally I don't think it's worth it, and my teeth have shifted just a lil, not enought for someone to see it in my smile, but it's noticable to me. *shrugs* I'm with you on this, retainers ARE a hassle, I'd rather just let them shift a lil bit naturally
Date: 7/31/2003 6:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    I've had my braces off for almost six years, I haven't worn my top retainer in probably at least three years or longer. I have a permanent retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth and my teeth are straight.
Date: 7/31/2003 6:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 19482    I had braces for a year and 10 months. I personally don't find the retainer that big of a hassel and have added it's cleaning into my daily routine. I think straight teeth are worth it because I worked really hard do get straight teeth. In the beginning, the orthos told me I'd have to have them for 2 to 2 and half years, but I got them off early because I listened and wore my rubber bands. I had to pay for most of my braces out of my college fund (my parents are going to pay it back eventually though), and I don't want to see all that money go to waste. I'm proud of my straight smile, and I want the proof that I take care of my body.
Date: 7/31/2003 6:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I had to take my own braces off, no joke. It actually was very easy.... anyway, that was about 12 or 13 yrs ago and I never got any retainers or anything after that. I do have a slight variation in my two front teeth on the bottom but everything pretty much stayed the same.

Date: 8/1/2003 8:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 30097    7 years and counting |. All because i had some stupie-poo Ortho who cared more about money then my teeth. Should be off soon, though. yaya
Date: 8/1/2003 1:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    i just got mine off like 2 weeks ago.. i have to wear my retainer all the time for a year (havnt been) and then after that only at night.. oh well
Date: 8/3/2003 10:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 27121    Well, my braces have been off for about a year and a half now. I have a permanent retainer on my bottom set of teeth (though it's not really bothersome since it's just a thin piece of wire) and I wear a regular retainer on my top set of teeth. In the first year, I had to wear the top retainer for 24 hours. After a year, I was allowed to wear it during the night (which is what I'm at right now) Generally, I don't think retainers are a hassle. They're certainly much better than braces ^.^ About wearing the retainer for the rest of your life, it is a good idea to wear it once in a while after your whole braces/retainer phase. As you get older, your teeth could get out of alignment so wearing your retainer once every few days/weeks will help prevent that from occurring.
