Does your Home Town Have One?.......sk8r

Tonight, here in my town is the opening night of the fair... this has gone on since as long as i can remember.... we have soap box derbies, a pet parade and then the actual fair. Coming froma small town , a victorian town, the vendors seem to grow and grow... it is beginning to look like a flea market rather than a fair. Still the kids enjoy it, they have a mini rollercoaster.. which scares the begee bees out of me since they put it together and rip it down so often... , and of course the ferris wheel. And the most nostaglic thing at the fair besides the salt water taffy is the fish tank!. I played it all my years growing up, and now my girls are. I even still looks the same. The one bummer about it.. is that they moved it from the Lions Hall (right around teh corner from me) to the arena. It was great being walking distance from the fair.... you could here the music from the local bands playing in the beer tent... We used to sit on our front porch and listen to the sound of the bands. *sigh*

Tell me about the fairs in your home town.

Date: 7/24/2003 6:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I used to love going to the fair here but five years ago another company bought out the one that came here and now it's just terrible!!! They charge outreagous prices for the things now (I know it wasn't cheap to begin with but now it's gotten rediculous) and all the rides are crappy now. I quit going about 2 years ago because of this. Love,
Date: 7/24/2003 6:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 56293    The County Fair is held in my town. It just ended on Saturday. They always have Demolition Derbys (which are my favorite), Stunt Shows, Tractor Pulls, generally a 'famous' country singer and some other entertainment. They have tons of food stand and about 10 rides I'd say. I don't ever get on them rides. Scare me to much...Just like you said, how they rip them apart and put them up so often. . . I love going to fairs!

I went to a concert at the state fair two years ago and went a few hours early and walked around and my parents were right.

Date: 7/24/2003 7:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    I grew up in a small town that didn't have a fair, but did have festivals..like fire and rescue day, there would be a parade and a dance and booths set up with crafts. But I did go to the NC state fair every year. My Dad was the Watkins vender there for years and I would get in for free, help him for a few hours and then go ride the rides and play the games.

First there is the Ox Roast Fair, then the Potato Festival then there's the Ballon-A-Fair. These have been around since I can remember and they keep growing every year. My favorite though is the one in a nearby town. They are have grown so much and they have everything. I love the demolition derbies more than any of the rides, etc.
Date: 7/24/2003 7:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 54084    You aren't kidding! The best thing was when I could finally get into the beer tent. My parents would escape in there until the fair closed. We weren't allowed in, the stinkers!!

Date: 7/24/2003 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    All of the ones I mentioned has rides, parades, games of all sorts, fireworks, etc. The Balloon-A-Fair also offers ballon rides and hot air balloons fills the skies for two days. It is very pretty. Balloonist comes from all over the world to be there. Main Street is closed for one weekend. LOL I still prefer the one in the next town that has the demolition derby's. A couple of my sons enters demolition derby's and I love watching them.
Date: 7/24/2003 10:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 52215    well, we have the Lanesville Heritage Festival...and let me tell you, that gets WILD!
Date: 7/24/2003 10:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 24319    We don't really have fairs, just small or large carnivlls (sp?). However, I use to go to PA every summer as a child with my family. It was the country part, I believe it was called 'rattle snake country' or something like that. And every year we would go when the fair was and walk down to it. It was mainly about snakes (mostly rattle snakes). They had this ring type thing and there were all different types of age groups. And every age group had a certain type of snake (none posionous) and a certain size. And there would be about 10 snakes in a bag and they would dump them in the middle of the ring and you had to go around and pick up the snakes and put them back in the bag. The last year we went there was this 4 year old girl and she went NUTS picking up the snakes. LOL one snake was so scared he squeezed his head underneath the bottom of the wood fence that was nailed to the bottom of the ring and the little girl grabed him by the tail and was trying to yank him out. They had to stop her before she ripped his head off. They also had a very very tiny parade. And on the back of the fire truck were 4 old ladies LOL. It was fun though, even for being a kid. I think I would have more fun now being an adult and actually being able to go and look at all of the cool things they had.
Date: 7/24/2003 10:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    We went today to our county fair and had a great time. We only go during the daytime because we take little ones. The weather was great, the shows, the rides and THE Food! It was fun!
Date: 7/24/2003 10:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    yup ours was called "riverboat days" and it's held in august
Date: 7/24/2003 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    The only thing even close to that that we have here is an Easter egg hunt. And it's hosted by the soon-to-be built church in my city. lol They said they were gonna build it 6 years ago and still haven't even started!
Date: 7/24/2003 10:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    Yep we have one every year. It covers about five acres and last's about a week. From the headline I was laughing and thinking of town drunk...... but I will let it be.
Date: 7/24/2003 11:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 53558    Nothing exciting happens in the town where I live, sorry to say. Great big hugs. Take care.
Date: 7/25/2003 12:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    I've never seen a soap box race before!! *pouts* They don't have any in the town where I'm at, or that I know of.
Date: 7/25/2003 12:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    Sometimes we get a small thing called The Taste of Beaverton. Where they play music, have beer, contests, fruits and other stuff in the town next to me. In the town next to me, there usually have fairs during the summer.
Date: 7/25/2003 3:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 52746    Our home town has a fair every year but we only walked among one as kids as mum wouldn't let us go on any of the rides. It was only when I was a teenager that I went with a friend to the fair and participated. It was fantastic.
Date: 7/25/2003 3:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 46069    Thanx for your comments all... every town varies from a little fair to a huge fair... its great to see the diversity of them...
Date: 7/25/2003 4:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    We have the Celtic Festival... it's a new thing, only in it's 7th or 8th year... and I've yet to make it. My family always seems to schedule the family reunion for the same weekend. If my family leaves it open for us, Chris' family takes it back. I hear the bagpipes all night long though In the fall (early September) we have the local 4H fair... animal judging, concerts (sometimes featuring ACTUAL celebrities!), a talent show for the locals to show off, demolition derby, tractor pull, rides (no roller coasters), lots of fair food and tons of vendors. We usually celebrate my daughter's birthday by taking her to the fair... she thinks the whole town parties just for her
Date: 7/25/2003 4:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    oh... we have "Shipshawana on the Road" in the spring, too In Ann Arbor (next town over) there's a street art fair (actually 3 or 4 of them going at the same time) that makes passage through the city impossible, but the inspiration it provides is priceless. It's right on campus so you get a lot of performance art, music and REALLY good food, too And we have an Antique Fair that shows up the last weekend of every month from spring through fall. I hadn't realized how many fairs we actually have!
Date: 7/25/2003 4:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    And the Strawberry Festival in Belleville (next town over the other way!) One of the largest small town festivals I've ever been to... starts out with a HUGE parade (almost 2 hours long) and free strawberries
