THE HELL THERE IS!!!

The Hell There Is!

The doctrine of hell is so frightening that almost every heretical sect ends up denying the reality of an eternal hell. The Unitarian-Universalists, the Seventh-Day Adventists, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Christadelphians, the Christian Scientists, the Religious Scientists, the New Agers, and the Mormons—all have rejected or modified the doctrine of hell so radically that it is no longer a serious threat. In recent decades, this decay has even invaded mainstream Evangelicalism, and a number of major Evangelical figures have advocated the view that there is no eternal hell—the wicked will simply be annihilated.

But the eternal nature of hell is stressed in the New Testament. For example, in Mark 9:47–48 Jesus warns us, "[I]t is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, where the worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched." And in Revelation 14:11, we read: "And the smoke of their torment goes up for ever and ever; and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name."

Hell is not just a theoretical possibility. Jesus warns us that real people go there. He says, "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few" (Matt. 7:13–14).

For these reasons, the Catholic Church is absolutely firm in teaching the reality of hell. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, ‘eternal fire.’ The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs" (CCC 1035).

In his 1994 book, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Pope John Paul II wrote that too often "preachers, catechists, teachers . . . no longer have the courage to preach the threat of hell" (p. 183).

Concerning the reality of hell, the pope says, "In point of fact, the ancient councils rejected the theory . . . according to which the world would be regenerated after destruction, and every creature would be saved; a theory which abolished hell. . . . [T]he words of Christ are unequivocal. In Matthew’s Gospel he speaks clearly of those who will go to eternal punishment (cf. Matt. 25:46). [But] who will these be? The Church has never made any pronouncement in this regard" (pp. 185–6).

Thus the issue that some will go to hell is decided, but the issue of who in particular will go to hell is undecided.

Date: 7/23/2003 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Sorry but..The teaching that the Catolic church is The Church goes against God's teachings, therefore it is not The Church..Paul says plainly..Gal 1-9 "but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert (change) the gospel of Christ. But *though we, or an angel from heaven*, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If ANY man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." It doesn't surprise me that so many attempt to do away with the teachings of hell. People don't like this and they will do almost anything to change it, but the fact is and always will be..God says hell is there..God says hell is for the disobedient..the liars, the murderers, the adulters, etc, etc..People are not stronger than God and hell cannot be wished away nor can it be overlooked. People attempt to change God's Word all in the name of wanting their cake and eating it too. People can turn to God and do His will to avoid hell or they can continue in their ways and sure enough enter into the gates of hell. God says so!

Date: 7/24/2003 7:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    It's only decided if one chooses to believe this and make it their reality...It was a wonderful way to control the masses....
Date: 7/24/2003 8:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 54111    hell is real. Great Post
Date: 7/24/2003 8:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 3125    Little Green Man..Tell me this..How did a bunch of different authors from all different ages, all prophesy that Jesus would come in the later times? How did different authors prophesy the destruction of Jerusalem long before it happened? Josephus even wrote about this destruction many years later as evidence that it did come about. There were many other O.T. prophesies which came about in the later days of the N.T. I wonder how these are explained away?..Of course..Those who do not want to believe have what they think are answers for this. Another thing..I never could figure how some people can so easily claim to believe in ghosts, reincarnation, evolution in which life began from either nothing or from an unintelligent energy that has always been, etc., yet so readily deny the possiblity of a great intellectual being.
Date: 7/24/2003 8:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    hehe Little Green Man, I new you could see my halo Barb!!! Give me a minute, I'm being filmed in a video at work, and when I'm done, I'll respond....It's good to see you my friend...
Date: 7/24/2003 8:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    Ther is a judgement and each one will stand before the Lord and be accountable for "the good and the bad" done in their life. The bible, Gods Word, clearly states that there is a hell. It has nothing top do with "controlling the masses" and everything to do with believing Gods Word... But, I also see evidence that there may be degrees of hell, now this is an interesting point for study....
Date: 7/24/2003 8:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    King, where do you get different degrees of Hell. I mean, hot must be hot. Now if there is a 70 degree hell, and I have to go to hell, then I pick that one....
Date: 7/24/2003 9:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    LOL@Pete, I will find and share the verses that "elude" to this....yea, 70 is about right....
Date: 7/24/2003 10:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    Christ told about a certain master who took a trip. While he was away, his servants, who had been charged with various responsibilities, disobeyed him. When the Lord returned, and discovered that some had knowingly been disobedient, while others had disobeyed in ignorance, he punished them according to the level of their culpability (Lk. 12:47-48). This parable or story may hint that punishment is in accordance with the severity of the offence...there are others as well that lean toward "degrees of punishment". Maybe I should do a post on the subject....

Date: 7/24/2003 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    So what about the guy on the cross that was next to Jesus and whom Jesus told he would see him in paradise ? It doesn't appear that man was going to hell for his sins...
Date: 7/24/2003 10:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    His belief and faith in Jesus gained him entry into paradise and for his "good works" that have gone on long after his death on the cross through his testimony related in Gods Word, I am sure he will be rewarded greatly at the judgment....
Date: 7/24/2003 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    There is also a scripture in Matthew (actually several) that leans toward degrees of punishment. In Matt. 112-24 where it states..."it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you..." speaking to Capernaum.
Date: 7/24/2003 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    Well then, as long as my good words survive on USM, I should attain that heavenly status too...LOL
Date: 7/24/2003 10:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    With that halo, I have no doubt...LOL,
Date: 7/24/2003 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    psst, King I was back reading some of "our" old posts, and I'm not going to be in Hell alone ya know.....LOL
Date: 7/24/2003 11:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    LOL, no sir, hell will not be a "lonely" place....
Date: 7/24/2003 3:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 62264    All good posts, I have a couple of words, hell exists, how and where it is is debatable but it exists. God gave us the freedom to choose, whether that be good or not is not for us to debate for we would all be mindless robots if we did'nt. Hell, like Heaven has multiple stages or levels to it depending on your terminology. for everything that exists there is an opposite. Judge not lest you be judged...The right to question is how people learn the truth. Religion is always debatable because we all have our interpretation of it.
Date: 7/28/2003 4:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 43948    I cannot comprehend how some people are so deeply consumed in these concepts of hell... do they get people off or something?
Date: 7/28/2003 4:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 43948    I am not making fun of anyone, but I mean, come on, it's so evident that hell is nothing more than just ways of metaphor or a gimmick (as St. Pete said, to control the masses) and it just baffles me on how some people are so firm in a belief of an afterlife (being heaven, or hell). Maybe it's just me, but I find it hell and heaven is the stuff fairy tales are made of. Sorry if I was a bother.
Date: 7/29/2003 7:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    I have no belief in a fiery burning hell that will as some think cause us to burn forever without ceasing. Spirit has said that ALL those who pass into the other world will eventually make it into God's heaven. For some this will take eons of time, but it WILL come to pass. This could never happen if we are either to be annihilated or if we languish in an eternal hell! This is more in line with the belief that God is a just and loving God, rather than the heartless and hateful Being that some make Him out to be.
Date: 7/29/2003 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    if god loves everyone he wouldn't condemn them to hell for simply being born in another region, and thus under the influence of another religion..all doing good and trying to get close to their god..think about it -----hell was written into a piece of work by men that wanted to scare people into doing what they said..
Date: 7/29/2003 7:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    Heather I agree!!!! It is contradictory to the essence of God... the importance being a personal relationship with "God"... IE, God's condemnation of his own creation, for the purpose of what?? Glorification of self?? Believe one way or go to hell????? Really?????? God having created all of us, regardless of our belief, with the idea that 99% of us are going to hell??? hmmmm seems quite illogical doesn't it??
Date: 9/27/2003 3:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62357    Death is real. Bible talks of that, and it's true, right? Some of us here on USM have encountered demons, and the Bible speaks of that. Heaven is real, because my dads brother just had a heartattack similiar to the one my dad had, but his brother died for four minutes in the ambulance going to the hospital,(he's a new christian) and woke up talking about the beautiful peaceful place he went, and acknowledged that it was Heaven, crying like a child. The Bible speaks of heaven. I feel Jesus in my heart, talking to me daily, and the Bible mentions that... So, if Jesus warned us of the PIT, and called it HELL, therefore, it too is real, and burning day and night, just as stated in the Bible. Read some near death experiences from people who have died, and been brought back, and dont you think God uses them for a testamony to the unbelievers? Food for thought........Darlene
