My opinion tips are earned. If my waiter/waitress is rude there will be no tip given. A while ago my hubby took the family out for dinner, mind you this doesn't happen very often. I was really looking forward to a nice sit down supper... well our waitress was really rude to begin with I think she asked once if we wanted refills on our soda after 40 minutes....spilled a glass of water on me (in my lap). I didn't get a "I'm sorry" or anything and I had to clean up the mess after she acted like it was my fault lol. So my son left her a penny for her thoughts lol.... |

That's bad service. I never drop off the bill unless the people are done eating, as I'm pulling their plates I usually put the check down. If I see that a busser has already pulled the plates as soon as I realize that and I see them just sitting there I go right over and give them their check. Busy or not there's really no excuse for that. I've never not left a tip. I tip very well but if you give bad service I'll just leave you the standard 15%. I couldn't not tip someone, just doesn't feel right to me. So, I think a tip above and beyond the standard is earned and a tip of 10-15% for bad service should just be given. |

I think tips are pretty much earned. We (me, my mom, and sis) went to this one popular restaurant and the lady never came to check up on us. My mom tried to get her attention but she just kept on talking and flashed us rude looks. From us she made a cent. |

a tip is a bonus to the job they get paid(maybe not well but they do get paid the legal minimum) i don't think it's right to ignore people after they have eaten or after they had thier food... i think they should offer 1 more refill after they take the dishes so that you as a patron don't feel rushed just the other day we went to red robbins with some friends we had made an order and the guy forgot the coffee... and it took getting the MEAL there to get the coffee.. so he only got 1 cup of coffee(no refills becuase we couldn't flag him down!) i found it quite rude!! fortunately he didn't charge for hte coffee but he didn't get any tip! we had to wait to be seated(people literly walked past us!) |

it's unfortunate that people "expect" a tip... BUT if you think about it would you ever tip the person helping you pick out your slacks, or the person who bagged your groceries... i sat back and thought recently the basic services are given to you by people who get getting paid minimum wage.. you couldn't live without these people but soo many have little to no respect for them |

Here they get paid $2.13 an hour midnightly not minimum wage, if they did get paid the minimum I might have a different view. Also they did provide a service, they took your order, brought your food etc so for at least doing that they should be compensated. Also servers are taxed on the amount of food they sell, so if you don't tip them they will still have to pay taxes on your order. I don't think anyone unless they call you names or get violent or something extreme should have to actually pay money for serving you a meal. |

I think most people should get a tip, unless they were downright rude. However as long as they were curtious to you, and took your order and at least brought you the food they should get at least 10%. Otherwise it should go up from there...i alwasy feel bad for waitresses..I give them at least 20%! (if they did a decent job) |

well minimum wage for waitresses and wiaters is like $2 something compared to $5.15..where normal places go.. so i would definitely tip as long as they were ok |

Are you going to be taxed on that sale though Midnightly? If you were taxed on it because the government assumed that you were going to get a tip then yes I would say you should get a tip. But you're not taxed on it you're taxed on the wage you make an hour. That to me is the difference, I can't not leave a tip for someone knowing that they're going to pay taxes on my meal. I just can't be that cruel. |

Well, since I am a waitress, I work for tips. I have to say earned. I work hard for the money I make and I make pretty good money. I have found that when I go to a restaurant, I am watching every move the server makes and the tip depends on the service. I won't NOT leave something. |

If the service is average, I tip 15%. If it is above average, I tip 20%, or more if it is really super service. If a server is rude, or negligent, I will tip less than the requisite 15%-- afterall, their job is more than bringing food to the table-- it is providing service and atmosphere. If I just wanted food, I could make that at home, and why should I pay someone for not doing their job? Of course, the service would have to be exceptionally egregious for me not to leave a tip. Incidentally, Midnightly, I notice that you are from Canada (lovely country, that is). In Canada, they have the good sense to pay their workers minimum wage. Here in the States, restaurants are allowed to figure tips as part of a server's income, hence they can pay them less than minimum wage. The servers depend on tips as part of their salary, which I think is dumb, because if it's obligatory, then it's not really a tip, is it? Why not just figure it into the price of the food and let people feel free to tip as they please? (because, restaurants make more money this way, that's why) Also, as Base mentioned, the federal government, realizing that restaurant servers were under-reporting their tips, recently established a law that figures earnings from tips that a server has to pay taxes on as a percentage of the income from the tables that they wait on-- hence, they have to pay taxes on a tip whether they actually receive it or no. Canadians don't always realize all this, which is why they are reputed in some parts for being bad tippers. |

Well I think to a certain extent they are earned but I have a hard time figuring out where to tip like if you go to a place like Steak and SHake should you tip there? Or Pizza Hut and would you tip as much there as you would in higher priced place(percentage wise)? I usually triple our tax is service was really good and double it if it was ok it was poor I will either leave the same amount as out tax or none at all. That rarely happens though. So lets say our total was 20.00 I would leave about 3.60 for good service possibly 4.00. I dont know if that is considered alot or not but when we leave the tip the waitress usually appears happy with it. We rarely go out to eat though |

Oh by the way tax here is 6.5 percent so I round it up to 20% for good service...good service to me is if they come out and fill my drink and ask me once or twice if everything is ok or if I need anything else. I do not want to talk to somebody I dont know while I m eating so I am probably easier to satisfy tehn most. I also clean up my own mess and my kids when we are done eating stack all the dishes and wipe any crumbs off the table onto a plate so that could also be why the waitresses are always so happy with me |

Two of my girls are waitresses. The pay per hour is $2.15. More often than not, they give excellent service. They don't pay their bills unless they do. But they still have the deadbeats who ask for 20 refills and leave a dollar tip. The people who eat almost the last bite before they "notice" the hair on their "steak". It goes both ways. Some people are stingy and should stick with fast food. |

Also this is how they are paying their way through school. I did the ssme thing. "Regulars", always tip well. Some who go out to eat "every so often" are looking for "slave" service. There are two sides to this. |

Base said it very well! Anyone who ever leaves a penny tip has never been a waitress. Long before I was a nurse, I served food instead of medicine. I went to school, I had babies. I was tired, I made mistakes, i blundered, and your pennies were what helped keep my children off welfare, keep me in school and I haven't forgotten that some are "just like that". |

Midnightly, when you break your back for $2.15 and hour, you do "expect" a tip. The government MAKES you pay taxes based on projected tips. I am sorry, but anyone who says "expects" a tip has never worked as a waiter or waitress and has no concept. There is no minimum wage to helps to make up for poor or stingy tippers. $2.15 an hour is rediculous. Service is based on how busy a restuarant is. Same as a hospital or clinic. Sure there is a difference in pay but service isn't always based on what "the once in a while diner" thinks fair. Fortunately these people don't eat out often. |

Well I leave a tip no matter what, bad service I give the 15%, good service and they get much more. Depending on where I eat like say at a buffet I put the tip {$5.oo} on the table when I sit down and the waiter/waitress sees it and they make sure they keep returning to the table and if they are really good I add more money to it before I leave. |

Just read the replies Shadow Ghost, Base, you are awesome! I used to waitress then I was a computer programmer, I loved being a waitress so much that I went back to doing it. I also made more money waitressing, I love people and being a waitress you get to meet many good people, there will always be people who will leave no tip and I treated them no different then the big tippers. Waitressing is a very hard job but if you like doing it then it is also very rewarding. I do not waitress anymore but I have made many a great friend of the customers and still talk with them today. |

everyone that says it has to be earned... consider that the waitress/waiter gets taxed on the tip that is or is not given... they get taxed by our government for ASSUMED tax based on the total of your bill... the government taxes the wait staff on the total of YOUR bill... if you stiff them a tip, they still have to pay a tax on an income they didn't get.... |

base here when you get your bill there is taxes on it(GST and PST) and taxes come off of your paycheck... and waiters and waitresses get paid atleast minimum wage if not more so i don't feel the excessive need to HAVE to tip... canada is different from the US i guess when it comes to this |
Date: 7/23/2003 2:04:00 PM

shadow ghost this is where i differ from you.. i am CANADIAN... here the goverment has set a MINIMUM WAGE this changes from province to province... no matter what the job may be(this doesn't count for under the counter style jobs like babysitting for example) there IS a MINIMUM WAGE and they cannot pay any less then that... even commission based places they get MINIMUM WAGE or thier commission whatever is HIGHER... so i don't feel the NEED to tip if service wasen't good here the server is making atleast 8BUX and hour! if not MORE(it can differ if they have been working longer, if it's a night shift they usually make more.. and so on) so they are making the same that i'm making working at a clothing store or anyother service job... tips are something that is ABOVE minimum wage... and technically they don't have to claim it and have it taxed if they don't want to |
