Same Sex Marriages

(Even though this is a Canadian thing, I do encourage everyone to state their opinion. It will soon be knocking on everyone's door, if it hasn't already occured.)

Across Canada, there is legislation which has been passed concerning the ability to legally marry the same gender. This has caused a sufficient amount of controversy, as it is to be anticipated.

I am witnessing a lot of people snarling over a law which I think should have never been a political issue in the first place. A lot of Conservatists and Religious Groups find that Same Sex Marriages go against what Canada stands for and that the nation will result in a loss of innocence. I personally believe these people don't have a clue what they are talking about, and that they do not know what their country stands for.

It should have always been so that homosexuals have the same rights as any other citizen. As the Charter of Rights
A lot of people believe they are not prejiduice, that they believe discrimination is wrong. This case is no different.

Now I know there is a lot of sensitivity surrounding this issue. But people must realize, regardless of belief, color, gender, times they are a changing, and they always will be. Think of what would life would be now if there was no dramatic shifts like The Civil Rights or Women's Rights movements (and everything else which occured in the generations following the 1950's).

From my perspective, I see nothing wrong with same sex marriages. I am a strong believer in equality, and not to allow homosexuals the right to marry goes against it. If homosexuals have the desire to be married, fine. That in no way has any correlation to myself or my way of life. It affects a minority of people, which is the gay community. What it doesn't affect the quality of food, personal healthcare or education, the serious aspects of my life which define the way I live.

Anyways, here is your debate:

What is your opinion on Same Sex Marriages? Should it be legal or outlawed, and why should it be that way? What drives you to make such a decision (religious beliefs, etc.)? Who and what else is this issue prone to affecting? Please state your comment clearly.

Date: 7/20/2003 8:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 15997    I think it should be legal...I have no right to judge anyone or how they want to live their lives and no one else should either and that's all to it.
Date: 7/20/2003 8:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i see no problem with it, marriage was around before christianity
Date: 7/20/2003 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I believe that any country is made up of homosexuals as well as hetrosexual people, I know its against all of our so called beliefs to go along with same sex marriages, but I for one believe that we should live and let live...I treat people the way that they treat me...irregardless of race, religion or sexual preferences....hugs
Date: 7/20/2003 8:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 56446    i think it should be legal. and i think that people should mind their own business about who people are marrying, unless its a life or death situation. and plus i love gay people their all fun and adorable and stuff!
Date: 7/20/2003 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 43274    of course homosexuals have the right to be married. if there is any injustice here it is that these people are harassed for doing what they feel.
Date: 7/20/2003 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 19482    Homosexuals are people right? Why deny them the right that people have?
Date: 7/20/2003 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    It's legal in TN and CA also...It's not a bad thing...it takes different things to make some people happy...some people like Cake and Candy some like Chicken and Fish....Just depends on who you are...I have no problem with it. It should be legal every where.
Date: 7/20/2003 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think it's perfectly acceptable... i think people should be able to do what they wish in the privacy of thier own bedrooms... allowing a gay couple to marry and hold the same rights as any other couple does not hurt anyone... it only creates equality
Date: 7/20/2003 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I believe same-sex marriages should be legal. I also believe the couple should have the right to be married by clergy, if they wish. If certain denominaions will not wed the couple, on religious ground, there are plenty of us who will. I am licensed in the State of Florida, a Minister with the Unitarian Church. I have already said: I will perform "life-commitments" till same sex marriages are legal & then I will marry anyone, whom I feel loves & respects each other, and about whom I have a clear concience. What people do in the privacy of there own lives, is not my buisness. Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bi-Sexual, those are private issues. NOW-JUST SO WE DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE COWA-BUNGA, I DO NOT APPROVE OF PEDOPHILIA, MAN/BOY LOVE ASSOCIATIONS, OR UNDERAGE SEXUAL ENCOUNTERS. Sorry to shout guys, but sometimes, you gotta spell it out for them. Maybe hit them between the eyes with it Good post. We need to get into the 21st century & grow-up.
Date: 7/20/2003 10:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 17561    First of all, Great Post!! Very well stated, nonleading! Second of all, i would like to correct at statement that author 62667 made about gay marriages being legal in Tenn. NO, they are not legal. We wish for them to be, but it's not that way in this given time. Now that's out of the way.....I happen to be a lesbian, and in a same sex marriage. This happened approx. 2 years ago. My answer to your debate question (which by the way is good) Why should same sex marriage even be a debate to begin with? Do we debate hetro's marriages? NO, do we question if their dignity is at stake? NO, we don't. *some history* before Christianity even became a thought, marriages were taking place with the same sex more often than not. Ony in the Christianity movement did the common folk question this long praticed ritual. It was stated in the religous books desinged to control many for taxes purposes. The more that were born the more taxes that could be taken. This is History, not my words, but histories words *winks* We go through centries of being taught that same sex marriages are to be debatable, to our present where we have become a minority rather then a majority. This is ok, as in ALL things, History does repeat itself :-) It may not be in our living lifetimes in the present, but you can bet it will obviously play a huge role in our generations to come. Marriage is not about sexual gender or preferences, it's about bond, sharing of self to another, person of love and compassion towards one another. We should not try to box ourselves in such limitations that we forget to appreciate another for who they are as a person rather than a gender. I'm not personally sure if this debate equates an amswer other then, why is it being debated to begin with! Thank for allowing my .02 worth *winks*
Date: 7/20/2003 11:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    I think it is perfectly acceptable and should be allowed..my question is why they even have to fight for it???? It should be a given that they should be able to marry...
Date: 7/20/2003 11:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i've said this before and i'll say it again(i donno if it was deleted or written on another post but) i see in or about 10 years in the future it will be challeneged in the US and become an issue with them working towards or being legal for single sex marriages
Date: 7/21/2003 6:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    I believe they should be able to marry.
Date: 7/21/2003 8:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 57404    I've said this before.. I think it should be legal. God Bless
Date: 7/21/2003 9:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 13974    Wow, I think the opposition has just started ignorring these debates.
Date: 7/21/2003 12:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 56293    I think Same Sex Marriages should be Legal everywhere. They should be given the same rights as everyone else.
Date: 7/21/2003 5:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    Christians I think are putting too much time in the Wrong Battle. I think to get rid of the Hate Crime laws(or other laws to protect gays from hate crimes) are more important to stop, than to stop Gay Marriages.
Date: 7/21/2003 7:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    The real problem isn't that the homosexual community is doing anything immoral or wrong..what it really boils down to is that "mainstream America" is not comfortable with seeing partners of the same sex out walking hand in hand, or sharing a kiss or any of the other things that we heterosexuals can do. So because of their discomfort they want to try to force same sex partners to "hide out" and keep their relationships behind closed doors where they won't have to witness it. Not being able to forcibly make them do this, they turn to their religious beliefs and the Bible in an effort to make politicians and governments pass laws against this so-called "atrocity and immorality". Eventually they'll have to learn to deal with it and see that homosexuals are people just like the rest of us with the same rights and freedoms..it's too bad that people have learned NOTHING over the years and our history of fights for equal rights for blacks and those for women...Fighting for equal rights and freedoms is what our country is rooted in...not religion.
Date: 7/21/2003 9:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 62066    Same Sex marriages should be legal. Isn't homosexuality decided at birth (from chemical balances in the brain)? If you love someone, nommatter what race, gender or religion, they should be be able to get married WITHOUT prejudice.
Date: 7/22/2003 7:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 36967    Mad MC, there is no proof that Sexual Orientation is decided at before birth. how is that proven, anyone ever stop to think about that. Where is the proof, even though the APA has stated that it has been proven, where is the study for it.
Date: 7/22/2003 7:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    there's much proof drkptrs......do you want someone to do the research on that FOR you?
Date: 7/22/2003 7:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 36967    sure

Date: 7/23/2003 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62146    Gays are people to their for they should have the same right people should see how they can not help who they are. Well I people should know being imuture about by the situation by saying gays should have no rights is not going to help it is just makeing something that should not considered a big deal worse.
