I would recommend that you talk to your doctor about helping you with your sleep problem since that is the root problem. The ephedrine can cause heart problems. |

I know that there are quite a few students here at my University that are addicted to those..and they always get to a point in which they "crash" and sleep for a really long time. I honestly don't know a lot about them..but I will do some research. I do think that they aren't going to help your problem...you need to sleep and they are going to make your sleeping problem worse. |

Speeking from experance...STOP TAKING THEM!!!! Please! They are not good for you. Try a strong cup of coffee. Change your diet, excercise, what ever you have to do. Kel |

I'd say go to a doctor. They may not be harmful, when taken in correct dosages. But in your case, they are being abused. So yeah, I'd go see a doctor ASAP before something very serious happens. |

ok, this is from a medical report: "Ephedrine can induce headaches, insomnia, tremors, nerve damage, rapid or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, seizures, brain damage, and death. The FDA received more than 1,500 reports of adverse reactions from ephedrine prior to September 2001." |

Thanks for all the replies. I have talked to my doctor about not sleeping and he told me to take Benadryl, it helped at first but now it's back to not sleeping. Heart problem, Release Me? Nobody has ever told me anything like that. Tarheel Girl, I probably wouldn't mind getting to the point where I sleep and sleep. Thanks for offering to do research for me, I really appreciate that. Kel, how did you stop? |

You probably need to revamp your entire diet and daily habits. Cutting out caffine and the ephed.. Getting plenty of physical exercise during the day. Try to regulate a sleep schedule. Go to bed everyday at the same time and get up everyday at the same time. These are some things that my doc told me. I tried the Benadryl thing too, but eventually it had a reverse effect on me and made me hyper, go figure. If all else fails, you can get your doc to prescribe a sleep aide. Good luck. |

Thanks again, Release Me! I am afraid that if I get a prescribed sleep aid it will leave me feeling droggy in the morning. My husband is on one and he has a heck of a time getting up before 9:00. |

try some valerian tea for sleep....as far as the pills, anything that gives you energy or uppers...whatever you want to call them, is going to have a risk for heart problems. Use the tea for sleep, and go get some peppermint oil to help you stay alert |

peppermint oil is just an essential oil.....extracted from mint leaves. You can buy it anywhere they sell essential oils. You put it on your temples.....there is lots of things you can do. What was in the sleepytime tea? If you know.... |

I don't remember what was in the tea, but it was guaranteed to make you sleepy. The oil gives you energy? |

not so much as energy but it helps to keep you alert.....Ephedra is the energy booster, which is what you are taking now. If you cut down the dosage ALOT.....and mixed it with another herb it wouldn't be so bad. Peppermint oil will help you stay alert and focus. If you are trying to get away from the uppers....like ephedra. BUT if that is what you want is an upper or something to give you energy, mix it with something and cut down the dosage. BUT to get away from the uppers I would do the peppermint oil...or I could suggest something else Good luck |

I really want to get away from uppers if at all possible. I don't want to be a hipercrite(sp?) and tell my children to stay away from drugs and not do it myself. I will try the oil, but what else could you recommend? |

Ephedra is a natural herb....and really not THAT bad when used properly, but you could also try ginseng. They come in pill form and can be found at any herbal store. |

that stuff is bad for your heart and if you can get off them please try to. As far as sleeping, heck I've had insomonia for almost eight years and so I'm not one to ask about this. But I have found that amitripoline is good to help sleep except that I stopped taking it as it causes manic depression. but I take benadral most times to help me sleep. I wish I could be of more help but you really need to get off that stuff for your own health. |
