This is a bit of a rant, so bare with me...

Yesterday my boyfriend and I had to say Goodbye to a great person and friend...because of a stupid law that is founded on religious bias and nothing more...

This friend, Steve, is gay. His partner is from Japan and has been going to school here for several years. Now that he is finished with school, he has to leave the country. If they were a straight couple, they could get married and all would be well, but because they are gay, and the marriage ceremony that they had isn't legal in most places in this country, his partner has to leave. He is moving to Canada and Steve is taking a teaching job in Wisconsin so they can be close enough to visit eachother.

It breaks my heart to see this couple go through so much to be together because our government feels the need to contol it's citizen's personal lives.

But what can be done to change it? I have protested and wrote letters..but there comes a time when you feel helpless...that our government doesn't care.

There is absolutely no reason for gay marriage to be illegal. The only arguement anyone seems to be able to come up with is "religious values", which is quite confusing because religion isn't SUPPOSE to have any factor in our laws...but it does..why? Every once in a while, someone will come up with the arguement about the preservation of the human race...logically, that is the most rediculas arguement I have ever heard...In the 2000 census, gay couples made up only 0.42% (less than 1%) of the total number of couples counted in the US. Believe me, there is absolutely no chance of the human race becoming extinct.

I apologize if this rant doesn't make sense, I am a bit emotional over my friend leaving...and that so many have to disrupt their lives, or live with unhappiness, because some people can't get past their own ignorance.

Date: 7/20/2003 4:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 49101    This is a beautiful post, and I couldn't agree with you more. I am sorry for the troubles you and your friends are enduring.
Date: 7/20/2003 4:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    I would not be able to understand the preservation of human race either because I bet the number of coupleless(sp?) children is far greater then that of gay couples. As for the laws I think they will eventually be changed as they were for so many other things that were once considered immoral
Date: 7/20/2003 4:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    Thank you both for your comments. I really do hope things will change soon. I have watched several of my friends suffer because they couldn't marry the ones they love.
Date: 7/20/2003 5:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    The laws will change in time but meanwhile find out what state has gay marriages legal. I think Vermont does and if so then your friends can go to Vermont and get married. I wish them the best of luck and I truely am sorry for the pain they are going through.
Date: 7/20/2003 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 43214    I agree with you 100%! Hopefully the laws will change soon. I wish the best for your friends, and I hope you feel better soon
Date: 7/20/2003 5:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    Storm Chaser..I believe they looked into that, but they had to go where ever Steve could find a job. He is an English Professor and the job market isn't that good. If they got married in Vermont (or anywhere that it is legal) it wouldn't be recognized as legal anywhere else in the country. It would only work if he could find a teaching position in Vermont.
Date: 7/20/2003 7:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think gay people(not just couples) make up a larger part.. i see nothing wrong with gay marriages.. and now that it's LEGAL in many places in canada(yes the law has past now) i can see the US slowly following behind within 10 or so years
