Ben gazed out the window at the light that was now pulsating. He didn't move a muscle. His hand held a pen that rested on some paper on the table next to him. The blot from the ink grew larger, musch as the light did.
Jen got up and closed the drapes. "There," she said,"problem solved." Ryan stood up and gave a loud yawn and stretched his arms. The clock chimed the top of the hour. It was five. They pushed their chairs to the back of room, out of the way and waited.
It wasn't long before their friend Paul showed up. He didn't knock. He was that kind of person. He popped in and very non-chalantly walked up the stairs to the kitchen. Jen was working with her back to him. Ryan had gotten something from the closet so he didn't notice Paul. It was quiet. Ryan walked to middle of the living room spotted Paul right away. "Paul, don't you dare. I just finished finishing it." He scolded. "First guests tradition, man. I gots to."
With that he ran an jumped over the balcony/kitchen wall onto Ryan. "That's the stuff, baby. Where's the food?"
This was a tradition Paul and Ben started the first year Ryan and Jen held their New Year's Eve party. But Ben wouldn't do this year. "You forgot something, Paul. Or should I say someone? Where's Ben?" Ryan asked as Paul shot up to the kitchen.
"Mph emph urmph mph." He answered.
"Finish the cheese, then tell me."
"He didn't come. He said not this year. I don't know what hit him. The guy loves parties. Anyway, sorry I late. I had to squint the whole way here. Some idiot had his brights on behind me." Paul said.
Just then a light came shining through the drapes. Ryan looked for awhile and finally approached. He pulled back the curtain ever so gently. It was only the light of cars. But something shined behind them.
