Should This Ever Happen?......................................WARRIOR SPIRIT

I was relating the story of how a transsexual person died several years, and decided maybe it is time people saw the kind of hatred that many of us have to face. This case happened in 1995, but it could have as easily happened yesterday. I have deleted certain words from the original article due to our "G" rating. My question for debate is, "Should it have happened in the first place", and "What needs to be done to insure it does not happen again?"

On Aug. 7, a routine car accident in Washington, D.C., turned into a demonstration of intolerance and disrespect for human life. Tyra Hunter was a passenger in a car when it was broadsided by another car at a four-way stop. When fire department personnel arrived at the scene Tyra and the driver had been pulled from the car and were lying on the ground. As a crowd gathered, a male firefighter began treating Tyra for her injuries. That is, until he cut open her pants leg and noticed she had male genitalia. Tyra was a male-to-female transsexual.

At that point, according to eye witnesses, the firefighter stood up and backed away from Tyra, who was semi-conscious and gasping for breath. One witness quoted him as saying, "this ain't no *****," as he began joking with the other fire department personnel at the scene. Another witness at the scene heard one of the firefighters say, "look, it's got a **** and *****." While the firefighters stood around making jokes about her, Tyra's treatment was discontinued temporarily.

People at the scene, frustrated with the firefighters' behavior, began shouting for them to help Tyra. Finally, some other firefighters went to work at treating her injuries. She later was transported to D . C . General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Date: 6/29/2003 12:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    What's to debate about?? Those stupid firefighters should be punished! That is so very terrible. Maybe that human life could have been saved if it wasn't for their ignorant behavior and gross neglect.
Date: 6/29/2003 12:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47296    Rusure, it was later determined tht immediate help on the part of firemedics could have very well saved the person's life. The thing is, how do we keep this from ever happeneing again in a country where some are not understood, or even tolerated by some.
Date: 6/29/2003 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 57404    That is just terrible. I think they should be held responsible for being so ignorant. They could have possibly saved her life. I could see being shocked or something. I am sure I would be if I thought a person was a female, and then saw that they weren't. But it would not stop me from trying to help that person, nor would I stand there and make fun of them while they are injured and dying. How aweful! God Bless
Date: 6/29/2003 12:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 18928    people will always be ignorant from others who are different than them, usually its just a case of their opinion, but in this case it was a tragedy. i became very interested in transgendered when the teena brandon story came out. so i did a lot of research, i learned many things, bc i took the time. most ppl will not do that, so things may not change :-(.... good post.
Date: 6/29/2003 12:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47296    Vadia, you would be surpirsed at how much time MsPriss and myself spend both on and offline trying to educate people about transsexualism, and gender dysphoria, which is the medical name for the condition that causes it. Many eventually understand, but there are always those who "just don't quite get it". I have always found one thing amusing though. Whenever discussing it with a male, it is always humerous to watch them suddenly act as if they are protecting their private parts when discussing the final surgical procedure, as if a ghostly knife is going to suddenly appear and castrate them.
Date: 6/29/2003 12:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    No, that should never happen, a human being is a human being, whatever form they are in.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    This is disgusting.. I am so sorry for poor Tyra.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    It's not clear whether she died from lack of attention or from the injuries. It is an appalling situation and the firefighters concerned should have been reprimanded severely. Also to do this in front of public ghouls is also unforgiveable. It is a tragic situation. She may have died from the shock of the embarrassment. I know if I was in that situation I would have wanted to die. I think it will take a long time for people to accept transexuals but progress has to start somewhere and that somewhere begins with YOU and ME, RIGHT NOW.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    WS..I am sure the firefighters know that there are transsexuals in this world. Whether they agree with it or not should not have stopped them from saving a human life. They treated Tyra like a germ or something just waiting to attack. They are trained to look beyond their own personal opinions and to not let them get in the way of saving a human being.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    A life is a LIFE; a human being is a HUMAN being; doesn't matter WHAT this person looks like or what organs they have or no organs. It is inexplicable; baffling, and incomprehensible as to how and why someone could let a "surprise" discovery overide their medical training and sense of duty to save her life. This is an example of bigotry and cold hearted disregard for anything humane; an outrage to all that is sane and sensible. Thank you for your efforts in trying to educate the masses.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    It should never happen, and yet unfortunately some will train for and become employed in many fields where they may have "training" or "education" but lack the compassion and caring necessary just to help save a life. He stopped life saving efforts because the clothes he cut off allowed him visual access to the patient's genitalia, and that became a priorty? Hopefully he was forced to find other employment.
Date: 6/29/2003 1:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 18928    lol WS... that would be amusing to see... hehe i assume you are familiar with the stoy i was talking about? i got to actully meet a person who knew someone who knew her. lol the web site is amazing
Date: 6/29/2003 1:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 18928    btw i assume you know it bc it was popular and you are interested in those stories, not for any other reason. :-) ((hugs))
Date: 6/29/2003 2:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 24845    All I can say is that is horrible. Who gives them the right to judge another person for something that they can't help. I say that the firefighter should have just shut the heck up and helped Tyra. It was uncalled for and unforgivable. Now the poor girl is dead. That firefighter has to live with that for the rest of his life, that he might of been able to save her if he had kept his judgemental mouth shut and had done his job. Just because some one is different doesn't make them less of a human being. That is horrible. I don't think that this should have happened. The thing is people can be cruel and more than likely it'll happen again one day. It's horrible but it's human. Sad to say.
Date: 6/29/2003 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    That is horrible! I think the firefighters should be fired and be charged for murder! Just because the person was a crossdresser doesn't men they don't diserve to be treated with medical help! And peple need to realize even if they hate it that gay's of any kind are here you can't do anything about it!
Date: 6/29/2003 2:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47296    The firefighters recieved a reprimand in the case. The person's mother did file a worngful death suit in the case, but never checked to see if she won it. After outrage from the people of Washington, DC over this case, training was given to to firefighters and medics that would hopefully keep this from happening again in that area.
Date: 6/29/2003 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    It never should have happened and those who are responsible should get punished. LOL@your reply to your post Warrior Spirit. Some of us are kinda sensitive about that "area" LOL,
Date: 6/29/2003 4:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 31765    No, it should never, ever happen. The value of human life is equal, no matter the person's sexual preference, gender, etc. The actions of these so called rescue workers is shameful. I am just speechless that they stood by. I'm glad you posted this. Maybe it will send a message that will change the views of just one person.
Date: 6/29/2003 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    it should have never happened.....it puts a lump in my throat when I hear stories like this.
Date: 6/29/2003 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 54111    I knew this person. My cousin has a child by his sister. It was a terrible situation. We all know this should not have happened. She was compensated. Of course they should have been punished.
Date: 6/29/2003 8:50:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47296    Big Daddi, I as not aware that there was anyone here who knew who Tyra was. I came across her story one night while looking through a site called "Remembering Our Dead", which a site that lists all the known transgendered persons who have died because of violence or neglect. My only wish when I posted this was to show the callousness of some people when it comes to people they do not understand. Peace be to you.
Date: 6/29/2003 9:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    BigDaadi-except my condolences for your family. I think WS points out, quite rightly, there are still some who would say "The freak brought it on themself". (sorry for the hard slap-in-the-face language....some people really do say this.) WS, about thirty years ago, my Father arrested a drunk Woman wandering down the street. When they called a Matron, they found out "she" was a "he". She was in fact, very drunk, and needed a holding cell. There was great dispute as to where to put her, since with the Men, she would be open to rape, or worse. But, legally, She could not be with the Women. My Father ended-up putting Her in a holding cell, till She sobered-up. But, I know, the other Cops stared, pointed, and made comments. Think of how long ago, it was,....yes, we have changed. And, we have grown as a Nation. *sigh*. When we first moved into our home, in 1993, we were warned about an older Lesbian couple in my neighborhood, and I was told to "Watch my Daughters", who were 8 & 12 years at the time. Talk about ignorance!
Date: 6/30/2003 1:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i think this is bullcrap, i was reading somewhere that some hospitals wont treat people who are trans-sexuals or transvestites, i find that disghusting, the duty of a hospital is to save people not to ridicule them, if i was the family i would have sued
Date: 6/30/2003 1:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    also what if she was a hermaphrodite, born half male, half female. would they have treated her then? i doubt it, cause they are ignorant, god i hate this world
Date: 6/30/2003 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 54111    Thanks LSG and WS. I didn't know him on a personally. He use to be up in my area in VA a long time ago and then he moved back to D.C, with his mom. There are a lot of people who can't accept different people. I had a cousin who came out to say she was a lesbian. At first my family was in a uproar. How can she be that!!!! Now They have learned to accept her and her parnter. I am a christian. I don't agree with the lifestyle but I will not hate or make anyone feel bad because it. no matter who you are.
Date: 6/30/2003 7:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    They need to be taken off duty, forever!!! They are there to help people reguardless of race, or gender or anything else. People like that dont belong in that kind of job where a person life is on the line.
Date: 7/1/2003 9:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 13283    Those firefighters disgust me ! Didnt they see the injured person needed help and not ridicule ? I am gonna be certified CPR trained soon ( at work ) and I will need to render aid whether they are male, female or gay ! I prefer they be female , but I will not deny gays or males aid . We all have a right to live . Razzy aka
Date: 7/3/2003 1:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    lol we all know why your prefer female*wink wink*
Date: 7/9/2003 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 48250    This is a Nightmare!!!! Horrible... I can't believe what I have just read.... Regardless of Someone's Belief's Sexual Orientation.. whatever this is unethical.., Inhuman... So Tragic.... Thanks for sharing this., it's just so sad.. T/C *Kentucky Bluebird*
