We have a new pet!-- Mike

Yes, today I had some money so I went to the mall and bought a PC Game, and a pet with what was left over. I was going to get a rat because we used to have rats back in the mid nineties and they were neat little guys. I ended up getting a Russian Dwarf Hamster instead. He's a neat little guy. Some people think hamsters are stupid, but from what I can see he's an intelligent critter. He's very alert and curious. Alertness and curiosity are signs of intelligence (that's why bird brain is actually a misnomer. Most birds are actually intelligent animals). He seems to figure things out fairly quickly as well. I decided to name him Buster. So far I got him a ten gallon aquarium and gave him some parakeet food after I got everything set up. That'll do him overnight. Tomorrow I'll go out and get him some hamster food and a ball to run in. Anyone else get new pets recently? Anyone else have hamsters? If so, what advice do you have on keeping them?

DO not pick him up while he is sleeping or eating other wise he may bite you. Hold him as often as possible so he will become and stay friendly. Give him things to play with and a place to exercise(such as a exercise wheel)
Date: 6/28/2003 11:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    I've had 5 in my lifetime not all at the same time and they all had different tempraments (sp?) The best ever hamster was Spicoli my first one and yes, do get chew sticks if they have it. And if they have it in the pet store there was some really interesting bedding! It is little squares, almost the shape of playing cards and they like to pull the material away and made a big wad that they sleep in. Spicoli loved that. But that was Spicoli. My next hamster was a jerk, bit at ALL times, his name was Fatty McGee. Then another great hamster, Brodie. And after Brodie was 2 more no good hamsters, they were Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Spicoli and Brodie both lived past their life expectancies. I miss them guys. Gee I wrote a lot!
Date: 6/29/2003 12:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    I used to have hampsters. They're so fun! But very annoying when they run on their wheel while ur trying to sleep. *L* Charlie was such a sweetheart and very friendly. Keep playing with the hampster and make sure to keep the cage clean. They like to chew alot so make sure you give them stuff to chew on. Hope you enjoy your new pet
Date: 6/29/2003 12:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 28193    We've had hampsters. I would buy lettuce mix for them. They would fight over the snow peas. We would give them all kinds of food, just to see what they would eat. They like chow mein noodles a lot too. They are fun to watch.
