This day in history for June 28th;

1635 -- French colony of Guadeloupe established in the Caribbean

1770 -- Quakers open a school for blacks in Philadelphia

1778 -- Mary Ludwig Hayes "Molly Pitcher" aids American patriots

1820 -- Tomato is proven nonpoisonous.

1838 -- Britain's Queen Victoria crowned in Westminster Abbey

1859 -- 1st dog show held (Newcastle-on-Tyne, England)

1869 -- R. W. Wood was appointed as the first Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy 1894 -- Labor Day established as a federal employees holiday.

1911 -- Samuel J. Battle became the first African-American policeman in New York City.

1918 -- 1st flight between Hawaiian Islands.

1924 -- Tornado strikes Sandusky Ohio & Lorain Ohio, killing 93

1928 -- Friedrich Schmiedl attempted rocket mail in Austria (unsucessful)

1938 -- The U.S. Congress created the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to insure construction loans.

1950 -- North Korean forces capture Seoul, South Korea

1960 -- In Cuba, Fidel Castro confiscated American-owned oil refineries without compensation.

1960 -- 26.42 cm (10.40") of rainfall, Dunmor, Kentucky (state 24-hour record)

1971 -- Supreme Court overturns draft evasion conviction of Muhammad Ali

1974 -- Fall of earth & rocks kill 200. (Quebrada Blanca Canyon, Columbia)

1975 -- Golfer Lee Trevino is struck by lightning at Western Open (Ill)

1983 -- Bridge section along I-95 in Greenwich, Ct collapsed kills 3

1996 -- The Citadel voted to admit women, ending a 153-year-old men-only policy at the South Carolina military school.

1997 -- Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield's ear after three rounds of their WBA heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas, NV

2001 - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit set aside an order that would break up Microsoft for antitrust violations. However, the judges did agree that the company was in violation of antitrust laws.

Date: 6/28/2003 4:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    holy jumpin! It took until 1820 to figure out that tomatoes are not poisonous but delicious. I heard it had something to do with the their dishes. "Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content
caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and
death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or
so, tomatoes were considered poisonous."
Bizarre eh.
I also didn't know that Lee Travino was hit by lightening. I love these daily things you do.
