There's No Real Justice In This World Anymore ¤Frankenstein¤

***A couple of months ago, there was a news story about a man who was fined for rescuing his dog from a burning house. Here's yet another example of how the law sometimes is so terribly wrong. The man in the following story is a hero and should be commended for his actions instead of being fined as though he had done something wrong. Folks, it's a sick world we're living in today. Here's the story.

A Florida man who caught an alligator with a rope because he feared it would attack a woman has been fined for being in possession of the animal.

Michael McCormick was given the $120 fine by a state game official called to the incident in Tavares.

McCormick said he saw the alligator crossing a road towards a woman holding two infants and two children at her side, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

"I just pulled over, made a loop with rope and tossed it over him," McCormick said.

He dragged the animal back to the edge of a fence that surrounds a retention pond. He said he told a friend to call police as he kept the alligator corralled.

When Tavares police officers arrived, they made McCormick cut the rope. They then called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

When game officer Monty Hinkle arrived, he said he understood McCormick's intentions, but had no choice but to issue the citation. Hinkle then called for a trapper to catch the alligator that had been set free just minutes before.

Joy Hill, a fish and wildlife commission spokeswoman, said McCormick should have directed his efforts to get the woman and children out of the way, not the alligator.

McCormick says he hasn't decided whether to pay the fine or take his case to court, but adds he would do the same again if he saw another alligator he thought was threatening.

Story filed: 14:50 Monday 23rd June 2003

***He should have just concentrated on trying to get them to safety? Do you know how fast an alligator can run? If it was already headed in their direction, he did the only reasonable thing he could have done. There was a woman with four kids, for crying out loud! Then, the morons set it loose only to bring someone in to try to catch it again. IDIOTS!

Date: 6/23/2003 2:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I couldn't agree more with you. Florida has some very tough rules about protecting the endangered wildlife there. Sometimes it seems like the animals have more protection than humans. Its amazing how many people go to Florida and swim in fresh water there. These guys are all over the place. My daughter lives in on the Atlantic coast, mid state, and almost every morning there were gators in the canal behind her house, just a few feet from pool area, which even though is enclosed, still gave me someething to think about when I took nightly walks. Alligators and red ants, who needs them? LOL

Date: 6/23/2003 4:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 62197    OK, a little trivia first......An Aligator can run at speeds of up ot 60 MPH... but only for a short distance. And author 12341, aligators are not on the endangered list anymore. They were taken off several years ago. It's a sad, sad world we're living in when good deeds (not to mention the man risking his life) are repaid with punishment. I suppose if this man had decided to be a real jerk and just let the gator get that poor woman and her kids that would have been ok with the cops..... *shakes head sadly* And aligators are my favorite thing too (I collect them) *sigh* Oh well..... Date: 6/23/2003 7:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    An alligator is barely a threat on land. When it runs it is unable to breathe because of the side to side movement that it has to make, so its running distance is very short. Had they been in water it would be a very different story. I don't think he should be ticketed or fined for not knowing this, however I agree that his efforts would be better direced at getting the woman and children out of the way.
Date: 6/23/2003 8:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Persephone, I must differ with you here. Anything which can be classified as little more than an automated eating machine which can run at sixty miles per hour is a threat. You're wrong about them being on land, too. Yes, they can swim very well but they aren't fish. They can breathe and exist just fine on dry land. They are very dangerous and I don't see how you can take such a stance. Are you just playing devil's advocate here? This post doesn't need that. If you'll read the replies, you'll see that no one agrees with you. Are you telling me that you'd be willing to risk the lives of a woman, a man and four kids just to keep a sorry animal with bad intentions from eating them being tied to a fence for a few minutes. You need to get your thinking and your priorities straight, in my opinion. This is a news article which I found interesting. It isn't a debate. I offered my opinion and everyone else did the same. Until your reply, everything was taken in the spirit in which it was intended. What's really your problem?
Date: 6/23/2003 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 17275    OMG that is just WRONG!
Date: 6/23/2003 10:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 22721    That guy could be a village idiot at a Renissance faire.
Date: 6/24/2003 5:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 6358    Wow I'd be taking it to court. Kudos for the man for doing the right thing...shame on them for fining him!
Date: 6/24/2003 5:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 52612    there never is any anyways,,.
Date: 6/26/2003 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    The better question would be what exactly is your problem? I stated an opinion based on knowledge of a fact-that alligators cannot breathe while running and therefore can run only very short distances-and you are attacking me for it. That is my stance-it would have been more efficient for the woman and children to move. How long do you think it took him to run and get a rope? I highly doubt a man just carries a rope around. Perhaps had he yelled for them to move while getting the rope I'd lend more support. Or maybe if the woman would have just taken it upon herself to just move on basic human instincts! Either way, I don't think that he should have gotten the fine, but I also think it could have been done differently. Had you desired a post where absolutely no one could disagree with your "spirit" you should have previously stated so. However...I disagree, and not just to play Devil's Advocate.
Date: 6/28/2003 7:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 16705    it's a shame that the world has gotten so bad that we now have to fine our heroes, that man risked his own life to help that poor woman and look where it got him, i hope he takes his case as far as it will go and i hope there is a way he can sue the pants off them.
