One of the lastest findings in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico was in Feb 2003, with the disovery of three female bodies in a desert like area. These of course, werent the first bodies found in the desert near Cuidad Juarez ( a run down town in Mexico) it seemed to be a serial killer's playground.
Corpses had been showing up in the area for years, sometimes in twos and in this case threes. The last few were found October of 2002 and even as early as January 2003. Police were very tight lipped as to who might be doing the killings, and this was fairly common for the town. Recent tolls would suggest over 340 bodies found in the area since 1993! It is not known whether all of these were serial killer victims, many could have been victims of jealously, mob hits or even accidents that were dumped.
Police have managed to put to jail over a dozen suspects for the murders since 1995. But still so many bodies appear, so it is often wondered if the police are covering something up to let the body count rise and rise again, more and more every year. One things for sure, its dangerous to be female and living in Ciudad Juarez.
Ciudad Juarez is well known for its poverty, people live day by day. They go to work, put food on their tables and try to get by another day. Its not a promising area, filled with drugs, sex and well known for brawls and so fourth. No one is sure how many people live there, many pass through, trying to get into the world famous 'America'. Its an area full of factories were people get paid a mere $5 a day. Harrassment claims are in abundance but when there is so many workers to chose from, bosses dont pay too much attention. People go their to work with dreams, and come back feeling abused and unsatisfied. Some, never get out at all.
Men overule women in every domain and money is so tight that police will cover anything up for a few dollars. Crime is a day to day routine in every day life for all that live in the area. Maybe this is way it has the highest rape and murder rates in history.
It is believed that it all begun in 1993. The first victims (young women) were found dead and slashed up with a knife. And a further 16 bodies were found by the end of that year. As the bodies began to mound, some were not even identified. Some were beaten, burnt alive, stabbed or strangled. Only a small majority were infact raped. The ages ranged from 11 to 35 years of age. All women, all missing, and found dead later on.
1995 proved the worst. 19 girls found and half were unidentified, still today. There seemed to be a common link beginning, many were found with their breasts bitten or even cut up. Not all were raped, but some were and this time, one victim had also been shot. This proved that there was at least one serial killer killing these girls, maybe not all of them, but definately a few every year. The police didnt seem overly concerned.
In 1995 a man was arrested, saying he was the sex slayer they were looking for, and he wasnt even mexican. An Egyptian man. It was said that he was obsessed with young girls, was in fact abused as a child and even had an agressive nature. Friends of the Egyptian told police about a hunting trip and how the shot a deer, and tortured it to death. He would disappear for days at a time and was found with unidentified womens belongings in his room.
He had spent time in jail for raping women and seemed to do it calmly but sadistically. He was finally trialed and put away for at least 30 years. As much as its comforting to know this monster is behind bars, away from society, its not comforting to know that he killings continued. 520 had vanished, without a trace and too many of them were young women. The bodies piled up even higher after the Egyptian was jailed, they caught a monster, but not THE monster.
By Mid 1996, another 14 bodies were found. Finally, they got a clue. They captured a handful of rebels that appeared to be killing young girls to free the Egyptian and make it look like the killer was still loose, so they would free him. The man was paying them from jail to do "copycat" killings. It is said that some of the rebels ended up in jail while the others were tortured by police. It is said also that they are responsible for the deaths of 17 young women and dental marks can prove it was all the identical mouth print.
Despite them being brought in and questioned, even locked up. The killings continued. Insufficient evidence later had them released, and even then, the kilings continued.
A further 16 bodies appeared before the end of 1996. And the whispers of police covering it all up grew louder.
It was 23 deaths in 1998, the worst year on record. It was soon realised that another serial killer might be at play. 17 victims they found, had their shoe laced tied together. Then there was the question of copy cats after that. While evidence grew less, the bodies kept growing more.
By 1999, the bodies were still showing up. A young girl managed to escape an attack by the local bus driver. He had abused her and nearly killed her. When police went to arrest him, he had vanished with his pregnant wife. Another group of people were questioned, police were led to beleive that they were part of a rape-murder gang that were operating in the area at the time. Further lack of evidence kept them out of jail, even though police are sure they can link the group to at least 20 kilings. But they cant put them away without the right evidence.
Still with nothing, another hot summer was approaching, leaving the desert dry for more victims. Finally with some expert advice, it was determined that at least 3 serial killers were definately working in the area. One was the infamous Ramirez, that would be captured in years to come.
While Ramirez was caught and cleard from any involvment with these murders, the bodies were still appearing and somthing really had to be done and fast. 2 grave sites were found, one with 9 bodies, another with 8. Two bus drivers were linked with the latter grave site and arrested. They were also linked with the gang serving time for being linked with other murders. Despite these two getting locked up and one later dying, the kilings didnt stop.
They had too many suspects, some even police by 2002 and thousands of women, walked down the streets in protest that not enough was being done to solve the murders.
By 2003, they gave up estimated how many had gone missing. They had so many suspects and many arrested, but despite all attempts to find out whats happening, the bodies keep piling up and still are today.
