A tear formed in Samantha’s eye; it grew and grew until, it finally, overflowed and ran its course down her soft cheek, dropped off her cheek, and hit the window sill, with a small, silent splash, below. She stood in her bedroom, staring out the window at nothing in particular. A look of despair absorbed her face. Her boyfriend of five years, Owen, was on his way to the airport. He was going to continue his schooling overseas – in England to be exact. The airport… England… the airport… England. These were the only two things Samantha was able to comprehend, and why not, the past five years had been extraordinary. That was, of course, up until two weeks ago when Owen informed Sam of his intentions to go to college in England. They hadn’t spoke since then.
Now Samantha saw how selfish she had been. Lying on her bed she thought back to the argument; she did say some pretty mean things. She understood why Owen wanted to go to England; his father lived there. What hurt her the most was that she knew in her heart that he wouldn’t be back once he was there, and she had no intentions of leaving America. Owen talked, many times, about how much he missed his father, and his wanting to live in England. Although Owen said he would be back for the summers, and for good once school was out, Samantha understood that… things change.
So she thought two weeks, when Owen, sitting on her bed next to her, told her about England. She told him that he must not care about the five years they had invested in each other, and she told him that… she wanted him to leave, that she would call him later – when she calmed down. The look on Owens face was that of pure sorrow. And as he left her room, she wanted to yell out: “Please don’t go!” But her stubbornness would not allow that. He left, and she didn’t call.
The clock on her wall read 1:10 in the afternoon. Owens plane was scheduled to leave at 1:35. The airport was twenty minutes away, and that was if you ignored the speed limit signs. Samantha couldn’t take it anymore; her nerves were going awry. Her breath was becoming harder and harder to take in and let out. If she was going to do anything she had to do it now… and she needed to do something. For all she knew she would never see Owen again, and she did love him very much.
She jumped out of bed, slipped on her shoes, and was out the front door of her house, in less then thirty seconds. Highway traffic was light; she thanked goodness for that. Once at the airport she parked her car awkwardly out front of the main entrance in a tow a way zone. She didn’t care about her car, or anything else for that matter, she just wanted to see Owen. Samantha raced through the airport as soon as she found out what terminal Owens plane was leaving from. But it was all for not. She just missed him, the clock read 1:37… she did get to see the plane leave.
She went back home depressed, yet changed. No more blowing your top, no more selfishness, or stubbornness. It was time for a change, because… things change. She pulled into the driveway, got out of her car, and walked up to the house with her head down; tears in her eyes. Once inside, Samantha headed right for her room. She opened her bedroom door, and walked inside to find…
…Owen lying on her bed. “I couldn’t leave you.” He said.
“Owen. You stayed!”
“Of course I did. I love you.”
A tear of joy ran from Samantha’s eye. “But your father, you’re schooling.” She cried.
“You’re the only one for me.” Owen said.
“But I was so selfish… I said those horrible things.” Samantha said, with tears running down her face in a stream.
“It wasn’t selfish, and the only reason you said those things to me was because you love me… and like I said, I love you… with all my heart.”
“You’re the only one for me too, Owen. I love you.”
