The REAL Mr. Harry Potter

While half of the world scrambles like ferocious animals towards the new Harry Potter book (and by the time this is published, that critical and melodramatical time will of passed), I thought I'd take a look back on the distinct magical realm of Harry Potter - his downfalls, his upward goals, his loves, his passions, and what he really represents in the world of children's literature.

I can only start this exploring passage with one definitive sentence:

Harry Potter is a nerd.

For those of you who are still reading this, albeit a bit huffed and puffed at my audacity to even categorize the young wizard as such, let me explain.

Harry Potter is a nerd, because he is a cultural icon with glasses.

Cultural icon you say?!? Yes, cultural icon. This small boy, with an owl who delivers the mail to him, and a lightning bolt tatooed (or is it burnt?) into his forehead, and a talent for befuddling his other-wordly nemesis, is a walking symbol, a frail image of adolescent heroism.

And lest us not forget his two friends: bumbling Ron, and sweet Hermione, who, no matter where young Harry Potter stands, they'll stand with him, like two rolls on the side of magic hot dog.

So what does this all mean, tho? Is it really a metaphor for our political landscape? Harry (Britian), Ron (US) and Hermione (Spain) all determined to rid the world of don't-say-his-name-but-I'm-going-to-anyways-Lord-Voldemoort (Hussein, Bin Laden...)?

Maybe. Maybe it is a brave testament to the Earthly battles that seem to manifest minute-by-minute costing lives. JK Rowling has blatantly stated that a key character is going to die in the 5th installment; I'm guessing it's the kid who sits next to Potter in Quiddish class.

There's also a certain adolescent brouhaha to the whole Potter world. I've always noticed some sort of attraction between Harry and Hermione. That's not a wand in his pocket, dearie. Is that it, a fantastic mirage of our teenage battles, of or our tween battles with the boogiemen in the closet, and under the bed?

I think to an extent that there exists infinite metaphorical possibilities to this whole Harry Potter thing. But one thing is for sure: this nerd, this teenage phenomenon is a rich boy; I sometimes think, does Harry himself know it? I catch hints in each book, such as: How does Harry now have gold-rimmed glasses instead of his cheap plastic kind? And that new broomstick, that's pretty new, too. Don't forget, that with all these new powers he's learning, that it's plausible for him to steal a thing or two.

Enough of this though. You're upset at me; you're charging me with blasphemy to your cherished product, your one thing to escape to, your isolated place of exagerated wonder.

So, buy the book I say, even if it's a metaphorical descent into quarrels, or adolescense, or childhood scares. Just enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, what that little nerdy wizard can do for you. Yes, you.

Date: 6/20/2003 11:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 37471    dude, read te first four books first before trying to be some smart talking critic. His thing on his forehead is a scar. He IS rich cause his parents left him a smal fortune in the bank. anyways, I know more about this book than you do, I dont even like Harry Potter, but im not ignorant enough to sit there and criticize JK Rowling's works before even attempting to read them all first.

Date: 6/21/2003 5:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 60052    I admire Ms. Rowling. She's done a wonderful job creating a lovable, innocent and heroic character that kids love. I look at it this way, he doesn't do drugs, kill people or insult women, so he makes a good role model for children. I am personally not into the Harry Potter series, but authors are artists who paint with words. She has created a beautiful piece of art in her own genre, and I say, "YOU GO GIRL!" In addition, there is nothing wrong with being nerdy, dorky, or wimpy, there is a place for everyone in this world, and Harry Potter reaches out to those children who feel they don't quite fit in. And who hasn't felt that way at some point in their life?

Date: 6/21/2003 7:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29387    Well, thanks to all of you who responded with a big LOL. All of you who are appalled at me because I can talk aout something without *gasp* reading the first 4 books have some harsh feelings, and some unhealthy addictions.
Date: 6/21/2003 7:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29387    And to all who critique me for being mean to nerdy, dorky, or wimpy people, please read the post again. You've missed the point completely.
Date: 6/22/2003 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 62141    Harry is actually more of an anti-hero. In the beginning especially he had no special skills. THe series of books show his evolvement from a dorky anti-hero into someone who can rise to most any occasion. He still doesn't think of himself as being a hero, but he knows that when he is forced to do heroic things, that he at least has some preperation and skills through hard work, clean living, and moral backbone. There are worse role models by far. Anyone who hasn't read this series of books is missing out on something very good.
Date: 6/22/2003 5:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 31048    LMAO...I'm actually a hardcore Harry fan myself, but I respect your opinion. LOL@ the "wand" in the pocket, LMAO. Have you seen the two movies?? I thought they were really good, you'd probably like them.

Date: 6/22/2003 5:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29387    Blondie - I have seen both movies and enjoyed them both very much; they represent the books well...Just to clear things up, I think the whole point of this spiel is to say that Harry Potter, with all of his success and growth, still remains a hero, no matter who he is. He does have morals, and works hard, and I think that he is one of the best, and most, unusual, heoroes in literature. Happy, Ikedude?
Date: 6/22/2003 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 62141    One addition to my earlier comment. I just finished reading "The Order of the Phoenix" a few minutes ago, and now I can say that at least the thoughts of being a hero passes through his mind, although that is still not his motivation for rescueing his friends from tight spots. Harry does bring out that little streak of dragon slayer that lies deeply in most of us.
Date: 6/24/2003 7:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 37471    yea, im happy now, thanx dude. harry potter is a cool cat.
