After fierce fighting here on November 29, 1864, the phantom of a gray wolf appeared to Cheyenne women and children to lead them to safety. Colonel John Chivington led the Third Colorado Regiment in the bloody attack on Chief Black Kettle's camp at Sandy Creek.
