U.S. Rep. Sends Letter to Pres. Bush
June 20, 2003
The Honorable George W. Bush
President
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
I am writing today in support of Governor Janet Napolitano's request to declare the areas affected by the Aspen Fire on Mt. Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona a Federal Disaster Area.
Today the Aspen Fire continues to threaten homes, businesses, and the lives of those working to contain it. Though the Forest Service and local fire fighters have worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, it continues to burn out of control.
Mt. Lemmon and Summerhaven play a vital role in the southern Arizona community. This area serves as a vacationing and recreational area for many Tucson residents as well as being home to several camps for youth organizations such the Boy and Girl scouts and those geared toward disadvantaged youth. The residents of Mt. Lemmon have always welcomed their neighbors with open arms. My heart goes out to the families and business owners who have already lost so much. The federal government needs to do all that it can to help rebuild this community.
I ask that you please support the Federal Disaster designation in order to rebuild the community and the environment of this national treasure.
Sincerely,
Jim Kolbe
Member of Congress
